They’re 4 and 18 months…and they make messes like no other. I know it’s their age, but I am constantly cleaning up juice and crumbs, wiping faces and floors, and scrubbing windows and walls. My son just turned four, and for the last few months, we’ve slowly been giving him small chores to complete to encourage responsibility.
I don’t know a single child (particularly those around my son’s age) who would willingly clean up without prodding and incentives. In fact, when my husband and I first introduced the idea of “clean up” time, my son outright refused. It’s important to us that our son learn the basic principles of responsibility, so we sat down and thought about creative, fun ways to instill that within him. Check out my video on how I get my kids to clean up!
If you have tips on how you get your children to clean up, I’d love to hear them.

I give my son (just turned 4 as well) .5 to set the table at night and he loves that because he gets to put it in his piggy bank. As for him making a mess he can’t go out and play until it’s cleaned up and that works most of the time. My 17 month old just does what he see’s his brother do lol.

Cherice, I love that idea of having children set the table. I think it’s a great way to promote family dinner time too. : ) I also need to be better about making my son clean up before going outside…. : )

We pick one room, set a timer for 10 min, and everybody ( mom and dad too!) cleans together. When the timer goes off we’re done – until the next day.

Rachel…..that is a fabulous tip. We definitely need to get ourselves a timer! : )

Gotta ask…are you an Auburn alum? I’m from Alabama, so of course, half my graduating class went there! 🙂
