Not So Extreme Bathroom Makeover

Posted by Caryn Bailey 4 Comments

Almost 3 years ago, we purchased our very first home.  We were so proud of the fact that we saved and saved and SAVED for that moment…that defining moment when we became home owners. While there is much freedom in owning a home, there is also much responsibility.  Our home requires maintenance and upkeep so that it not only looks good, but functions properly.

Before we moved into our house, we had to paint the interior of it in it’s entirety, replace all the carpeting, and scrub (and I do mean SCRUB).  Interestingly enough, we painted every single wall in our home except for our master bathroom.  I really don’t know why we never ended up painting it, but it was always something I thought about doing.

One of the things that constantly surprises about Walmart is the fact that they sell practically everything…even paint!  Their Glidden Brilliance Collection combines both the paint and the primer so that taking on a task such as painting isn’t an all-weekend event.  And, combining the two into one means you’ll save money!

Choose your sheen!

There are a TON of colors to choose from, and once you’ve decided, Walmart will mix it up for you in the store for free (takes about 10 minutes).  Besides the paint, you’ll want to pick up Painter’s Tape (which will help keep you from painting the ceiling or another wall), a roller brush (which makes painting quick and achieves a smooth, even look), an angled brush (for corners or hard to reach areas), a paint tray, and a tarp.  I also recommend picking up a few samples before purchasing the paint so you can match them at home against the other colors present. Walmart sells a few paint kits which include some of the supplies mentioned above and they’re very affordable (some less than $10).

Being the eco-conscious gal that I am, I immediately requested information about VOC’s since the hubby and I made a commitment not to include any paint with the substance in our homes.  Not sure what VOC’s are? Check out what the EPA has to say about them.  Let’s just say that the “new paint” smell that tends to linger for weeks is not healthy for anyone. Fortunately, Glidden paints contain no VOC’s.  Now that doesn’t mean there isn’t an odor.  But it’s only mildly noticeable during painting (as in just keep the windows open) and gone by the time it’s dry.  We could sleep in our bedroom with our children that very night and there was absolutely no smell.

We opted for the Semi-Gloss in Swiss Coffee and I absolutely love the way it dried.  Our whitish walls which were once drab are now glossy and sheen!  Here is a quick video of the process.

Taping the edges...

As you can see in the video, the preparation is relatively simple. We covered the floor and sink with a tarp and taped all of the edges.  We pretty much used the paint right after we purchased it so I didn’t notice any separation of colors upon opening.  One can (which is about a gallon) covers 300-400 square feet.  To be honest, I’m not sure how that translates but it was more than enough to paint our bathroom.  While I don’t think we need to apply a second coat, if we do, we might have to purchase a bit more paint.

Even my son can paint!

The paint itself is relatively easy to work with. It didn’t splatter or drip and covered the wall nicely.  The particular type we purchased is mildew-resistant which makes it ideal for use in our bathroom.  Overall we were quite pleased with the quality and ease of use.  And who can beat the price which is less than $30?

It's complete!

For more information you can visit Walmart’s website, but I highly encourage visiting your local store in person so that you can view their entire line including all of their color options.  Remember that Glidden offers paint for both interior and exterior surfaces so be certain you’ve selected the proper paint.
