Most kids have contemplated the possibility of time travel, even if it was fleeting, as was the case with my son. Children are dreamers and they think anything is possible. I love films that celebrate children and their dreams like Mr. Peabody and Sherman, which engages children in an exciting, historic, educational adventure.
Inspired by the characters that appeared in Rocky and His Friends and The Bullwinkle Show in the late ’50s and early ’60s, Mr. Peabody and Sherman follow the beloved pair on a historic adventure back in time. Mr. Peabody is an inventor, scientist, and genius so you might be surprised to learn that he is also a dog. Seven-year-old Sherman is Mr. Peabody’s adopted son, whom he tutors through the use of his time machine cleverly named the WABAC.
Despite Mr. Peabody’s preeminent intelligence, being raised by a dog presents its own challenges for Sherman, who finds himself being ridiculed by a girl. In an effort to smooth over their differences, Mr. Peabody invites Penny and her parents over for dinner. While the “adults” become acquainted, Sherman and Penny find themselves immersed in a hilarious ride in the WABAC machine back through time where they meet King Tut, help Leonardo da Vinci with his infamous Mona Lisa painting, and find themselves entrenched in the Trojan War. As the events of history unfold, Mr. Peabody must embark on his biggest adventure yet to repair history, save the future, and learn how to be a father.
Mr. Peabody and Sherman is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Each include a host of special features, but if you purchase the Blu-ray Deluxe Edition, you’ll enjoy all of them.
