As a young couple in our late 20’s, buying a house was a dream! We scored a fabulous deal on a spacious home in Orange County but the caveat was that it needed some work. After a deep clean, some new appliances, a fresh coat of VOC-free paint, and brand new carpet we were set to move in. We had a lot of decisions to make at the time, including whether or not to carpet the downstairs living area of our new home. Our son had not yet reached his second birthday and it really would have made more sense to keep it safe by carpeting that entire area. But all of my experience up to that point was negative and I knew that after a few months the carpet in such a highly trafficked area would look awful. Where was SmartStrand carpet when I needed it? : )
Last weekend, I headed to the Port of Los Angeles for a day filled with crustaceans and carpets! You’re probably wondering what the relationship is between the city’s annual Lobster Festival and my laments over flooring. Mohawk, the world’s largest manufacturer of flooring, is currently on a nationwide tour to showcase their innovative carpet that repels stains again and again.
While most carpets are treated with stain-resistant chemicals, SmartStrand has stain and soil protection built into the fibers which means it will never wear out. This means that most stains (including lobster) come out with water. It was easy to believe that things like dirt or juice could easily be removed with plain water. But what about red wine? Soy sauce? Food-dye-laden Powerade?
Watch this quick demo I participated in during LA’s Lobster Festival:
For a family like ours, who are concerned about the chemicals we use in our home and around our children, this is a wonderful alternative to conventional flooring. And because the fibers are plant-based, families don’t have to worry about that fresh, not-so-pleasant-probably-toxic-new-carpet-smell.
If for some reason a stain does not come out easily with water, Mohawk recommends a mild detergent (i.e. dish soap). There should never be a need to use carpet cleaners with SmartStrand carpet.
Mohawk has partnered with Better TV to spread the word about SmartStrand carpet. During the License to Spill Tour in LA, I had an opportunity to meet the Better Show host JD Roberto who was testing out SmartStrand and recording segments for the show. And in true Lobster Fest fashion, Noramae Munster from Ports O’ Call Waterfront Dining was offering visitors samples of Lobster Cioppino. Yum!
This dish created by the venue was actually used to put SmartStrand to the ultimate crustacean test! See if the carpet passed…
Mohawk will be making just four more stops across the country. To find out if they’ll be coming to your city, visit MohawkFlooring.com/licensetospill. While you’re on the site, be sure to enter to win a 6′ x 9′ SmartStrand Silk Bound Carpet Rug.

I LOVE that the fibers are plant based! The topical stain fighters cause skin irritation with my son and I, so knowing this carpet is going to stay clean AND be kind to the skin is a huge plus. I’m looking into this for our home ASAP #client
