It’s a Tuesday afternoon and my kids are discussing the legitimacy of the Easter Bunny. Profound conversations for elementary school kids. I consider interrupting, but they’ve already moved on to Moana and Pokémon GO. Easter is upon us, and in our family, the significance of the holiday goes much deeper than colored eggs and chocolate rabbits. Yet always wanting to keep my kids youthful for as long as possible, folklore and reverence for the significance of this holiday co-exist.
As a young girl, Easter was deeply rooted in tradition. Easter sunrise service was followed by brunch with family and an Easter egg hunt with the kids. I appreciated my parents’ ability to provide balance, always allowing me to be a child. I came away with an accurate understanding of significant holidays without lamenting the fact that I didn’t get jelly beans from the Easter Bunny.
Keeping Up the Easter Outfit Tradition
As part of our Easter traditions, my mom would take me shopping for an Easter dress. I loved shopping with my mom. My dreams and aspirations were conceived in between the shoe section and accessories. I thought about those deep conversations with my mom as my daughter picked out her Easter outfit over the weekend at our local JCPenney store. At seven, she knows what she likes and is determined to own her sense of style. Our conversations are still limited to Girl Scouts, our upcoming camping trip, and when she can play with her Beados. But the bond we share continues to be strengthened over Vans and designer crossbody bags (which for the record, she is too young for). It is obvious who she takes after when it comes to style.
For my daughter’s Modern Easter Look, we started with this adorable Lilt Sleeveless Sundress. We love the casual vest-style bodice interplayed with a tulle skirt.
To complete the look, my daughter picked out a pair of Converse® Chuck Taylor All Star Oxford Sneakers in Aqua. These shoes are incredibly versatile and pair well with leggings, shorts, and casual dresses.
While the dress is modern and casual, I encourage my daughter to keep her accessories simple so the focus remained on the dress. She picked out a simple turquoise bow and then perused the women’s handbag section for a coordinating purse. One glance at the girls’ section and my daughter abandoned it in search of bags that fit her style. As soon as she saw the Lily Bloom Mia Mini Crossbody Bag she refused to look at any other bags. The Woodland Butterfly print coordinates perfectly with my daughter’s outfit. This purse, while technically made for adults, can be used by younger girls because of its compact size and adjustable strap. It’s just big enough to hold a few items such as a chapstick, a notepad and a few Shopkins. And since it can be worn across the body, my daughter doesn’t have to worry about carrying it (or losing it!).
The total cost for this outfit, including the purse, was just under $75 plus tax. Right now, JCPenney is having an incredible Easter Sale with savings of up to 30% off when you spend over $100. They also have online coupons that can be combined with certain sale items for even greater savings (I saved over $80!).
