Mama’s Rules Rock!

I thought once we had our little boy, the slew of advice thrown at me would somehow abate. Unfortunately, well-meaning mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers and everyone else believe they are the expert on parenting and I should heed their advice! This has resulted in frustration and confusion for my husband and I as we sift through what we’re being told, what we’re reading, and what we’re fumbling through on this bumpy road we call parenting.

I was so excited to be given the opportunity to read and review Mama Rock’s Rules, a new parenting book authored by Rose Rock, THE mother of Chris Rock. This amazing woman raised ten kids plus seventeen foster children, so at the very least, she gains credibility due to her immense experience. Her ten “rules” are simple, practical, and attainable…something all parents need in a society that is laden with information overload.

“Mama Rock” is witty, down-to-earth, and speaks mama-to-mama about how to raise confident, independent, respectable, and successful children. I appreciate Mama Rock’s candid dialogue, as she discusses how to deal with the difficult parenting situations that will inevitably arise. From dirty language to dirty deeds Mama Rock shares wise advice for newbies like myself who can’t imagine the day when I’ll actually have to use this information.

My favorite chapter, Reading is Righteous, reinforced and renewed my love of reading. Mama Rock reminded me of the immense opportunities for discovery posed by reading. Despite how how feeble my attempts to read to my son seem at present, one day my little boy will remember and hopefully acquire the same reverence for reading his mommy does.

In a contemporary, easy-to-read narrative intermixed with stories from the past, Mama Rock advises parents on how to help their children face obstacles and embrace their sense of self worth. Mama Rock doesn’t stop at discipline, boundaries, and responsibility like most parenting books on the market. You’ll learn the importance of incorporating religion, family traditions and memories, and family mealtime (her recipe for sweet potato pie rocks!) in raising secure children.
