Making a Splash! Step2’s WaterWheel Play Table

Posted by Caryn Bailey 4 Comments

My children absolutely love the water. They look forward to bath time to splash and play, particularly during the summer to get some reprieve from the heat.  If they’re not in the pool, they’re running in the sprinklers or playing with the water in the bathroom (seriously!).  Since water is best played with outside, I thought they’d enjoy Step2’s latest outdoor toy, the WaterWheel Play Table.

Step2 WaterWheel Play Table

A few years back, we reviewed Step2’s Arctic Splash Water Table and, if you can believe it, we still have it!  Apart from a bit of fading, it’s managed to survive years of splash play.  Their new WaterWheel Play Table holds 4 gallons of water and offers children a place to merge their exploratory, creative sides with their need to be outdoors having fun.

The play table is very easy to assemble and simply requires snapping the legs into place and putting the water wheel together.  It’s compact enough to fit in a small space in a backyard and just the right size that my 2 and 5 year old can play together comfortably.  In addition to the water wheel tower, the table comes with 2 boats and a cup and features built-in sections that can be used as canals, moats or lakes.

The falling water from the water wheel was fascinating to my daughter and intriguing to my son, who I imagine was trying to figure out exactly how it works.  Since the action of pouring water into the cup (which includes a built-in hole) causes the wheel to move, this water toy is a great way to teach children cause and effect.

In addition to the water wheel, the play table comes with two sailboats.  My children absolutely love the play table but I wish the sail boats didn’t come apart so easily.  We’re also planning on taking some of the toys from our Arctic Splash Water Table and using them with this one.

The table is 2 1/2 feet off the ground which makes it less likely that children will get dirty. I can’t guarantee, however, that they won’t get wet!

The WaterWheel Play Table retails for $36.99 and is designed for children ages 1 and over.

Eco-Tip: Rather than donating our older play table, we filled it with dirt and planted herbs…seriously!

No compensation was received for this post.  As part of Step2′s Test Drive Program, I receive products for which I provide my honest feedback.

My son would love this. He loves anything to do outdoors that involves playing with water.

I keep telling my husband I am going to get our son a water table for the back deck. I really like this one, so I’m going to show it to my husband and see what he thinks!
