The sun is setting over the Kern River and we’re finally sitting down after a busy day spent hiking in the Sequoia National Forest. The glow of the campfire makes it possible to distinguish the new and familiar faces that are part of our group, bonding over s’mores and tent fails. “Who’s older?” a woman around my age inquires as she looks first at my mom and then at me. This isn’t the first time that we’ve been mistaken for sisters, and I suspect that has more to do with our bond than the Latina genes that graciously afford us our youthful looks.
Growing up as an only child isn’t without its advantages, most importantly the unshakable bond foraged with your parents. Even at the height of my teen angst stent, I still sought out the wisdom of my father and my mother’s fashion advice. I have several friends who comment on the immense blessing of having a close relationship with my mother, and if I could use just one word to describe her, it would be love.
It wasn’t until my own children were born did I fully grasp the love my mom has for our family and what it means to love someone so completely, selflessly, and unconditionally. And this genuine care for people extends beyond our immediate family. I’ve witnessed her love people in gracious, often sacrificial ways that challenge our world’s “take care of you” perspective. She has taught me to be a better mother, friend, co-worker, and daughter, often solely by example.
Because of how my mother loved my father, and her co-workers, and my kids, I have a deeper, fuller understanding of how to love people. Dove is celebrating the women who inspire us, and for the first time in 60 years, changing the look of their beauty bars. Each bar is engraved with one of four words (love, real, kind, care) to symbolize the impact women have on family, friends, co-workers and sphere of influence. I had a difficult time choosing just one word for my mother because she embodies all four of those words, often concurrently.
Twelve years ago, Dove set out to broaden the definition of beauty and begin a conversation that challenged previous beauty stereotypes. Subsequently their Campaign for Real Beauty evolved into an approach that identified beauty as a source of confidence in their Movement for Self-Esteem. The brand is inspiring women across the globe to embrace what makes them beautiful, much of which may have little to do with what we see on the outside.
For a limited time, you can gift a special women one of these engraved Dove Beauty Bars to celebrate her and the impact she has had on your life. You can share your own story about that special women using the hashtag #BeautyIs on your social channels with Dove.
