The film stars the voice talents of Rob Schneider, Tim Curry, and Alan Cumming in a story about a rare white koala bear named Johnny who wants to fit in and make friends. With help from his sidekicks which include a crafty Tasmanian devil, a lovable lizard, and a boomerang-flinging female koala, Johnny learns to stand up for himself and accept his unique traits both inside and out.
During our time at the LA Zoo, we also had an opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion with Bravo’s Flipping Out star Jenni Pulos, who voices Charlotte in Koala Kid. In an age where bullying seems to be prevalent amongst even young children, this film boldly addresses this issue in a way that is both engaging and meaningful for children. Some of the important takeaways that parents can continue dialoguing with their children about include fitting in, treating others the way you want to be treated, and accepting yourself (both inside and out) regardless of what others think. I also love how Jenni emphasized that kids can really do anything they want to do if they put their mind to it.
Koala Kid is on DVD and available at Walmart. Alternately, you can watch the movie directly online.
