After a week of spending quality family time, I’m sitting here with my husband and two children feeling incredibly blessed. This Christmas was relatively quiet, and much of the time was spent enjoying the things we love. I cooked up some gourmet dishes while the kids played and built to their heart’s content. We caught up on some movies we’d been wanting to see and even saw a touch of winter snow.
There are so many things we take for granted…food…clothing…shelter. And while I think about issues like poverty and hunger often, the holiday season seems to heighten awareness of those needs. Of all the needs our country faces, child hunger weighs heaviest on my mind. It is difficult for me to wrap my mind around the fact that our country, in all of it’s affluence, still sees 1 in 5 children hungry…without breakfast…every single day.
There has been a ton of research regarding the importance of breakfast, particularly for growing children. Breakfast literally means “to break the fast,” and when children don’t get those vital nutrients after going several hours without food, their physical and intellectual growth is affected. The growing bodies and developing brains of children rely on regular food intake and those children who do not receive this, suffer physical, intellectual, and behavioral consequences (WebMD).
Once again, I’ll be working with Kellogg’s to help raise awareness surrounding child hunger. Together with Taye Diggs and Action for Healthy Kids, they’ll work to provide 1 million breakfasts to children in need. By simply sharing, tweeting, pinning, or watching a video about the Share Breakfast Campaign, Kellogg’s will donate one breakfast. It’s an easy way to make a difference!
