Twenty years after the theatrical debut of Jumanji, the sequel, Welcome to the Junble was released. Admittedly, this is the film that our family is most familiar with, but I found a brief refresh on the background helped provide context as I prepared for the world premiere of Jumanji: The Next Level earlier this week.
Consideration provided by Sony.
Jumanji
The fantastical comedy was based on a children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg and followed the story of a supernatural board game that releases jungle-based hazards on its players. As a boy, Alan Parrish (Robin Williams) became trapped in the game while playing with his best friend. Twenty six years later, siblings Judy and Peter Shepherd find and begin playing the game, which accidentally releases Alan, now an adult. After finding Sara, the four endeavor to finish the game and reverse the destruction it caused.
Jumanji: The Next Level was part reboot/part sequel and was actually the third installment in the franchise. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Nick Jonas, the film was set twenty one years after Jumanji and followed the four teens who were transported into the world of Jumanji as their chosen characters. Together, they must beat the game in order to return home.
Jumanji: The Next Level
The latest film by by Sony finds the four teens reunited in a game that has now changed. The film is set three years after Welcome to the Jungle, and introduces newcomers Awkwafina, Danny Glover, and Danny DeVito.
Now in college, Spencer, Martha, Fridge, and Bethany decide to reunite for the holidays. Ironically, Spencer goes missing, prompting his friends to go to his home. When they discover that Spencer kept the broken pieces of Jumanji, they assume he has gone back in and follow suit.
Once inside the game, the gang realize that nothing is as expected. Spencer’s grandfather Eddie (Danny DeVito) and his best friend Milo are transported into the game, but end up as Dr. Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) and Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart). Fridge is Professor Oberon (Jack Black) and Bethany gets left behind. Martha remains as Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan). Together they venture to find Spencer and escape the world’s most dangerous game, all while braving parts unknown and unexplored, including the arid deserts and the snowy mountains.
Jumanji in 4DX
The video game action in Jumanji lends itself well to 4DX. The immersive cinematic format places audiences inside the film as they become part of the action. Jumanji in 4DX features motion seating, wind, rain, fog, scent, and lightning, all designed to intensify the climactic scenes in the film. Moviegoers will enter the world of Jumanji with a flash of lightning, fog, and pitching of the motion seats. When the players “die,” audiences feel that thud in their seats.
