After serving our country under excruciating conditions, our brave men and women should be honored when they return home. But very often, these valiant veterans find themselves unemployed and in need of housing, even if just temporarily. Earlier this week, I shared information about Walmart’s Renewed Veteran’s Commitment which includes hiring any honorably discharged veteran within the first 12 months of separation from service and pledging an ADDITIONAL $20 million through 2019 to support employment-related programs.
According to recent statistics by the Illinois State Veterans Department, there are more homeless veterans today than US soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. The need for housing, specifically in Chicago, is growing which is why organizations like football legend Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors are so indispensable. Allen’s organization provides financial assistance and support to injured US military veterans by building and remodeling handicap accessible homes to suit each individual’s needs. Allen started the organization after a USO trip to U.S. Military Bases in the Middle East as a way to thank and honor these men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.
Continuing their longstanding commitment to our nation’s heroes, Walmart and Procter & Gamble (P&G) recently partnered with Allen and his foundation in an effort to better the lives of Chicago veterans. On Veteran’s Day, Allen visited a local Walmart store to pick up items for the Eddie Beard Vet House, which provides temporary housing for up to 15 veterans. In addition to the P&G products purchased, the Vet House received an additional one-year supply of products which will help meet the continual need for supplies. Interim housing locations like the Vet House are vital for helping veterans get back on their feet and improving their quality of life. Within 8 months of residing at the Vet House, 70% of veterans find permanent housing and establish an income, proving how valuable the organization is.
