I always knew I would be a mom. Playing Barbie as a little girl was only half-way pretend for me. I knew one day I would meet my Ken and we would have our happy little family. I was one of the last of my friends to get married and having children was no different. My best friend was planning her daughter’s second birthday party and hubby and I were planning our trip to Europe. It seemed we would never settle down to have a family. It was never the right time. We weren’t in our jobs long enough, we didn’t have a house, I wasn’t sure what direction my career was headed, hubby didn’t know where his career was headed. And by the way….we were living in Scotland! But one little plus sign on a plastic test strip on a blustery winter morning in our way-too-spacious flat thousands of miles away from our family and friends changed our lives forever. When we found out I was pregnant, I was shocked…but certain…surprised…scared..excited…nauseous (Duh!) I felt so many different emotions all at once. My time had finally come. Our little munchkin is almost 9 months old and I cannot imagine what my life was like before him.
Among all the plans we made, I started dreaming about tea parties, dress-up, American Girl dolls, and ballet. I secretly hoped for a girl but in reality I knew all along we were having a boy. Call it mother’s instinct or God’s sense of humor but when we had that gender determining ultrasound I knew I was right before she even pointed out the distinguishing parts. We were unmistakenly having a boy. Now what? I hardly knew enough about soccer, little league, bugs, and dirt to be a mom to a son.
So far it hasn’t been as difficult as I thought it would be (but then again he is only 9 months old). I can elicit joyful giggles simply by playing peek-a-boo. Perhaps its time to read that book hubby bought a few months ago. What does a first-time mom to a son need to know to raise a son? I’d love to hear your suggestions, ideas, and experiences.
