Is Your Child Getting Enough Omega-3?

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Experts say that it can take at least 10 times for a child to try a food before they like it. My ten-year-old has long surpassed that number with regards to fish and seafood, which leaves me challenged to find an Omega-3 supplement she will actually take. We were recently introduced to Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets, rich in DHA fish oil without the fishy taste. But would my ten-year-old take them?

I received this product for free from Moms Meet (momsmeet.com) to use and post my honest opinions. Compensation for this post was provided and this page may contain affiliate links.

Why Kids Need Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for healthy brain, central nervous system, and cardiovascular systems development. There is also some indication that Omega-3 can support learning, healthy behavior, and temperament in children.

These essential fatty acids also help the body absorb nutrients and crucial for healthy eye function (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics). But most children do not eat sufficient foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. And while our bodies do not produce Omega-3, without adequate consumption from foods, supplementation might be indicated (always check with your child’s physician before starting any supplement).

Food should be your family’s first source of Omega-3. Here are a list of food rich in these essential fatty acids:

  • Salmon
  • Sardines
  • Mackerel
  • Fresh tuna
  • Trout
  • Herring
  • Halibut
  • Oysters
  • Shrimp
  • Beef
  • Flaxseeds
  • Walnuts
  • Chia seeds
  • Soy beans
Omega 3 For Kids

Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets

While I do not worry about my son’s intake of Omega-3, my daughter does not consume any of the foods listed above. I have tried a number of Omega-3 supplements with her to no avail. She cannot get past the fishy aftertaste of many over-the-counter supplements.

Kids like colors, shapes, and choice, all three of which Kids Smart thought about when innovating these supplements. My daughter was immediately drawn to the fun fish shapes and she really liked that she had the option of chewing the supplement or squirting the oil in her mouth. Kids Smart is also offered in 3 flavors, giving my daughter an additional choice for supplementation.

We tried Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets together for the first time by simply chewing the burstlet and allowing it to dissolve in our mouths. Admittedly, the burstlet has a texture kids may or may not like. We decided to squeeze the burstlet into our mouth the next time we tried the supplement and both agreed that was the preferable method. To recap, Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets can be taken one of two ways:

  • Chew the burstlet and allow it and the oil to dissolve in your mouth
  • Twist off the tail of the burstlet and squeeze the liquid into or on food or directly into your mouth.

So…what do they taste like? Kids Smart High DHA Fish Oil Chewable Burstlets are offered in blackcurrant, strawberry, orange, and berry flavors. They are also micro-encapsulated, which means there should not be any fishy aftertaste. The burstlets are sweet and reminiscent of their respective flavors. While I did notice a slight fish taste upon consumption, there was not fishy aftertaste. These are definitely the most palatable Omega-3 supplements I’ve tried and the first my daughter will actually consume.
