I grew up as an only child, which meant I spent a lot of time playing by myself. I always wanted a sibling, and my mom reminds me how I persisted in asking her, as if she could magically produce a brother or a sister by snapping her fingers. When I would pretend play with dolls, the story always played out the same…boy and girl get married and have kids. And that is exactly how I imagined the course my life would take. While I never struggled with infertility, friends around me started to share their struggles…how having a baby was not as easy as they thought it would be. Some of my friends chose medical intervention…others chose adoption. Each journey was different, and yet, I began to get a sense of the joys and challenges they faced as they struggled to become parents. Instant Family, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, is a poignant film that broaches the topic of foster care adoption and perfect for families with tweens and teens.

Instant Family on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital
Inspired by the real events from the life of writer/director Sean Anders, Instant Family follows the story of Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) as they decide to start a family. The couple soon decide to explore foster care adoption where they hope to adopt a young child. When they meet three siblings, they find themselves taking in 3 kids overnight. Along with rebellious 15-year-old Lizzy, Pete and Ellie must learn to navigate instant parenthood as they struggle to become a family.
I really liked how the film weaved together the comedic and poignant moments the couple experience on their journey to adoption and parenthood. Because of the film’s subject matter and some more adult types of content, I recommend families watch Instant Family with their older Tweens and/or Teens. Instant Family is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital.
