As a young girl, you would often find me with a book in hand, reading every moment I could. Despite the fact that my time is very limited during this stage of my life, I still have a strong, deep-rooted passion for reading. Technology has innovated the way children and young adults read. But the experience of opening a book, turning the pages, and becoming engrossed in the words cannot be replicated.
Both of my children are in the pre-reading stage. I made a commitment when my son was a baby that I would aim to read for at least 20 minutes every. single. day. And on most days, we meet or supersede that goal. Both of my children enjoy and are intrigued by the stories I read to them. Sometimes, when I’m busy with my daughter, I’ll hear my son “reading” one of the books we’ve read numerous times together. He remembers the stories and will say them (paraphrasing, of course) out loud. Not only is it incredibly adorable, it’s rewarding to know we are inspiring both of our children to love reading.
Summer is the time school-aged children look forward to getting a break from the homework routine. When my children are old enough to go to school, I will be sure to differentiate between the homework ritual and the enjoyment of reading a book.
Because of my love for reading, my children have a small library. The number of books we possess is quite extensive. My children’s favorites are board books with textures and sounds and books based on characters they are familiar with.
Some children enjoy the familiarity of reading the same book over and over again (my son went through that stage). But now that he’s older, he wants something new…something different…something challenging.
