Two weeks ago, I stood on the red carpet, mingling with journalists and celebrities, in anticipation of the premiere of John Carter. The film, which is based on the book A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, opens in theaters nationwide today.
Because film is one of my passions, I like to expand my repertoire of movie genres beyond romance, drama, action, comedy, and animation. Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton, the film has been hailed as an epic adventure and I wholeheartedly agree.
Set on the mysterious planet of Barsoom (aka Mars), the movie follows the story of former military captain John Carter, who is mysteriously transported to Mars. Once there, he finds himself in the middle of a conflict amongst the planet’s inhabitants. He also learns that the planet is dying from the loss of its atmosphere but makes it his goal to save Barsoom and his species from extinction.
If you’ve read the books (I highly recommend at least reading the one the film is based on), you’ll understand and appreciate the immersive 3D world and the deep plot. Visually, the film is quite stunning…colorful…imaginative. The film is definitely of the sci-fi nature but still one that can be enjoyed by those that aren’t lovers of science fiction.
