Never has there been a more perfect time to have a baby and raise a family than here in the US in 2008. Modern technology has come a long way and we are afforded access to services and products that make the things we do convenient. In some ways I find our reliance on technology a little unnerving.
Communication and connectedness are key components of my social and family life. Unfortunately that means I rely heavily on cell phones and wireless internet. The truth is that the heart of my reliance on modern technology is my sincere desire to connect with my friends and family on a personal level. Practically, it’s important for me to be “connected” to know what’s going on in the world.
Whether it be to check in when I’m away from my son, call my husband to let him know where we are and what we’re doing, call my son’s doctor, or arrange a playdate, a cell phone is a necessary convenience. Similarly, the internet is another way I stay sane keep my son and I informed and in the know about products and services pertinent to our lives. The internet is an endless wealth of information and it’s how I’ve found playgroups, activities, services, and products that enhance our day-to-day living.
These days, I find my GPS to be invaluable in keep me from getting lost. You would think that a girl who has spent her entire life living in Southern California would be able to navigate the city with her eyes closed. Not so! I can get lost like a tourist with one wrong turn. “Glenda” (as my husband calls it) is my very best driving companion.
Could I be a great mother without my techie toys? Absolutely! Besides the basics of food, water, and clothing, my son only requires my love and attention. Much of our time is spent at the park or playing and reading at home or on play dates with other moms and tots. It’s good for us to be outdoors, exploring the beauty of it all. But life happens too and that’s where modern technology weaves it’s way in.
This weekend over at The Parent Bloggers Network, you can read all about the conveniences parents can’t live without. Head on over! You just might win a $200 Visa card courtesy of Yoplait Kids!
