One of the many joys of being a parent is watching my children discover their passions. In some instances, it took me over 30 years to realize my passions for food, travel, the arts, and photography. When we started introducing our children to sports and other extra-curricular activities, it was trial and error. For instance, my son played baseball for the first time last year, and while he enjoyed it, he never felt like it was his passion. Come Fall soccer season, I’ve watched my son go from learning to dribble and pass to playing defense and learning how to “shoot.” This Winter and Spring, he opted to continue Soccer rather than pursue another season of baseball, and we felt like part of him discovering what he enjoys and is good at involves allowing him to make those decisions.
We just completed our first season of soccer last week and I know that this sport is something he is passionate about because he was tearful before his first game. When we surprised him by telling him he would be continuing in the winter, he was overjoyed.
I love this season in our childrens’ lives because they are growing and changing, developing their own unique personalities. We have delved deep into extracurricular activities to help our children find what it is they are passionate about. In addition to exploring their individual talents, we believe in teaching our children how joyful and fulfilling it is to give back.
My son started Cub Scouts this year and I absolutely love that their first achievement involved collecting items to donate to our local food bank. After handing out more than 200 flyers in our neighborhood alone, we collected wagons filled with food and headed over to a local church to sort everything out. We used this opportunity to talk to our son about the fact that some people don’t have enough food on their table, but that our collections helped make a huge difference for families this holiday season.
Recently, I shared information about Nissan’s latest social campaign which inspires people to find out those passions that drive them. When you visit Nissan Espanol on Facebook, you’ll find a link to their Passion Genome app. After analyzing your likes, the app will create your passion portrait which I found to be quite accurate. Through December 14th, you can enter to win a $1,000 Amazon Gift Card just for sharing your Passion Portrait.
Nissan launched the Passion Genome in conjunction with its brand new 2014 Versa Note. This zippy, 5-passenger vehicle boasts class-leading fuel efficiency, dynamic styling, and cutting edge technology. I personally found it quite impressive that the vehicle can seat 5 passengers, making road trips a breeze. For those who’s passions involve the outdoors, the Versa Note’s 5th door gives them the freedom to pursue an active lifestyle without limits.
