From time to time, I’ve shared bits and pieces of our pre-parental travels. But how did we end up moving all the way to Edinburgh, Scotland for almost one year?
We had been married approximately 6 months when we decided to take a two week trip to Europe. We were still relishing in the memories of our Tahitian honeymoon and itching to continue traveling. While I was well-traveled, my husband’s family vacations were primarily limited to the US. With our sights set on Europe, the challenge was determining just how we were going to do the trip. Two weeks would only brush the surface of such a country rich in history. With my nursing background as a foundation, we set off on Memorial Day, 2006. Everything we needed was housed in those two suitcases. Who knew how significant such a trip would be.
It’s almost impossible to describe how memorable that trip was. My husband and I were still newlyweds and the time we spent growing our relationship was invaluable. When my first 13 week nursing contract was coming to an end, we agreed that it was not time to head home. I signed another 13 week contract and we continued traveling on my days off.
While overseas, both of our parents planned trips out to visit with us. During our time with my parents, we decided to take a week to visit Greece. The familiarity of family was wonderful….but something was off. I was emotional…impatient…unwielding (aka stubborn). Why would it matter so much if we didn’t have crepes two mornings in a row? And why did I HAVE to have those French potatoes at that moment? Why you ask? The answer lied in a pink plus sign a week later. We were pregnant with my son.
That cool winter day in Edinburgh, when my husband and I stood holding each other in the kitchen of our two bedroom flat, our lives changed…our dreams changed…We were heading home.
I love looking at photos from our time in Europe. My favorites? The photos I took during those early weeks of pregnancy when I was attempting to prove to the world that I was indeed pregnant.
One day we’ll go back. We’ll climb Arthur’s Seat and eat French potatoes and stroll past our Morningside Flat where my husband and I once dreamed. But next time, we’ll do it with our two sweet children…
