School is out ,which means a summer filled with play, togetherness, and memory making. But while we’ve been making the most of the summer, hoping the new school year doesn’t approach too quickly, there are children who can’t enjoy their vacation away from school because they are hungry. In fact, this time of year is critical for children without a a regular, secure food source.
The summer months very often leave thousands of children hungry.
Why? According to the USDA (Department of Agriculture), 19.5 million low-income children receive free or reduced meals during the school year. When school breaks for the summer, these children do not have access to food, which then impedes a child’s ability to learn and thus the chasm between high and low-income youth widens. In fact, children can actually regress academically during the summer months due to inadequate access to food and learning activities.
Recognizing that the summer months are a critical time for youth, Walmart has pledged to help through it’s summer giving campaign. They have partnered with six non-profits to serve more than 10 million meals to school age children in low-income/inner city areas, provide 16,000 children access to summer learning programs, and provide summer jobs and skills training to 3,000 inner city youth.
I value how involved Walmart is within the community and how they use their resources to help children during this critical time. To learn more about the summer giving campaign, just visit the website.
