She smiles coyly as she talks about that time in her life when she met my father, certain that the miniskirts she wore attracted him to her. She worked in Manhattan at a time when skinny jeans and wedges wouldn’t suffice at the office she worked at. “I used to buy a new outfit every single week,” she reminds me as we peruse the Shops at Mission Viejo on Mother’s Day in search of the perfect outfit. We settle on my favorite store, White House Black Market, and in many ways, it feels like I’m 16 and my mom is schooling me on stripes and polka dots. Only now I have my daughter in tow, who’s surprisingly attentive.
Fashion trends come and go, but the one staple item I always have in my closet that never goes out of style is a pair of jeans. Since I practically live in them, my mom and my daughter perused the expansive denim selection at White House Black Market in search of a new pair as part of my Mother’s Day gift. If you follow trends, you’ve likely noticed a revival in “ripped jeans.” Hailed from the 80s, the more modern approach is a distressed, faux-ripped look.
Available in Dark Wash Denim, these Distressed Skinny Crop Jeans feature a cozy cotton/rayon/polyester/spandex blend which offers a slimming yet comfortable fit. The “ripped jeans” appearance was accomplished with distressed points for a worn look without compromising the integrity of the jean. They sit at the ankle which is ideal for petite women like myself. If you’re in between sizes, I recommend sizing down since these jeans will give and stretch with wear.
Another trend we’re following this year is asymmetric hems and necklines. These origami-inspired “folds” we’re seeing are sophisticated and flattering, ideal for more formal events and evenings out. My daughter selected a gorgeous Layered Shimmer Sweater Tank in rose, which features a rayon/metallic/nylon fabric blend and a back keyhole close. The subtle shimmer makes it red-carpet worthy and the asymmetric hem adds a modern touch ideal for pairing with your favorite jeans or even a pair of classy shorts.
To complete my look, I borrowed from some of my favorite accessories including a block heel and a teal, asymmetric clutch. I like to add touches of color when I accessorize for a bold, unique look. Think just outside of your current color scheme to include colors that might compliment your outfit.
White House Black Market is just one of 150 stores and restaurants located at the Shops at Mission Viejo. This particular mall has recently added 6 new retailers including Madewell, The Melt, Full Psycle, A Pea in the Pod, Soma and Islands Fine Burgers & Drinks and much of it has been remodeled, including the food court which has a modern, spacious ambiance. Some of my favorite stores include Apple, Sephora, Banana Republic, Williams-Sonoma, Steve Madden, LEGO, and The Disney Store. Their designated kids club, Simon Kidgits, offers year-round events and educational opportunities, coupons, discounts, prizes and more. And if you sign up as a Shops at Mission Viejo Simon Mall Insider, you’ll be entered to win $1,000 plus be the first to know about deals and events happening at the mall. Be sure to visit The Shops at Mission Viejo on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest information, deals, events and trends.
