How To Protect Yourself From Identity Theft

Posted by Caryn Bailey 7 Comments

It’s one of the fastest growing crimes in the nation, and if you think it can’t happen to you, consider this statistic:

The most common form of reported identity theft in America in 2011 was government documents/benefits fraud, followed by credit card fraud, phone/utilities fraud, and bank fraud.

If you still think you are  immune, you can see how your state ranks when it comes to identity theft.  I just happen to live in the 3rd highest ranking state for identity theft complaints, and unfortunately, I’ve fallen victim to scams and had my identity stolen.

Identity theft comes in a variety of forms, including the unauthorized use of your personal information (name, address, Social Security Number, credit Card number) to commit fraud and/or other crimes.  Since joining LifeLock, I’ve already armed myself with knowledge and resources to help keep my family’s information safe.

LifeLock recently released a series of videos to help answer your top questions about identity theft.  Along with offering several identity theft protection plans (which I’ll go into in depth in the coming months), LifeLock offers a variety of tools and educational resources to help consumers understand and be proactive about this growing threat.

Thank you for the reminder. I’ve known people who burn anything with their name on it. I, on the other hand, don’t do much of that. Thanks for the reminder!
