How To Make An Açaí Bowl + The Benefits of This Superfruit! *Giveaway*

Earlier this week, while my husband was roasting butternut squash for a vegan soup, I started thinking about why I am so passionate about healthy living, particularly as it relates to food.  Beyond the fact that I simply feel better when I eat foods that are wholesome and natural, I also love the diverse colors and flavors of food, best enjoyed in their unprocessed state.  I like to think I’m adventurous when it comes to food and really love trying anything new. Just like there are many different sides to me and my personality, so it is with food.  Because of my willingness to try new things, I’ve discovered new foods I really enjoy, even now as an adult.

Sambazon Acai Cafe

In the last several years, people have been paying close attention to super foods because of their high concentration of nutrients and potential ability to ward off some of the most prevalent diseases faced by people in this country.  While I’ve heard a little about the Açaí berry, it wasn’t until I met with Sambazon that I learned just how powerful (and delicious) this superfruit is.

Found in the Amazon jungle, it is rich in antioxidants and healthy fats but does not contain sugar.  Because of it’s favorable nutritional profile, Sambazon created a line of fresh juices, smoothies, and frozen smoothie packs that make use of the Açaí berry. What is incredible about their product line is the fact that they are Organic, Fair Trade Certified, Vegan, Non-GMO, Dairy and Gluten Free!  I’ve actually spotted several of their products in my local natural foods store and have been intrigued, but my visit to my local Sambazon Açaí Café was my very first experience with the super fruit!

During our Superfood breakfast, we learned about Sambazon’s commitment to sustainability and learned how they are able to bring the nutrition of the Açaí berry to the world while supporting environmental and social well being of the Amazon and its people. Their story is fascinating, and I encourage you to read further if you are interested.

The highlight of the day was creating the infamous Açaí bowl!  I’ve heard wonders about this bowl, but had no idea what was in it or how to make it.  While it’s not entirely easy to describe, I like to think of the Açaí bowl as a sorbet-like smoothie topped with your favorite fruits, nuts, and healthy toppings.

Here is the simple, three-ingredient recipe for the perfect Açaí bowl:

  • 2 packs Sambazon Original Açaí Frozen Smoothie
  • 1/2 banana (use less if it is ripe to maintain a thick consistency)
  • A splash of apple juice or milk (we use almond milk)
  • Top with granola, fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, and anything else  you prefer
Add the liquid, banana, and smoothie packs into the blender. Blend on high until thick and smooth. You can add more liquid, if necessary but be sure to keep it thick. Place in a bowl and add your favorite toppings.

The bowl I created at the cafe included chocolate almond milk and peanut butter and I topped it with granola, fresh strawberries, and cacao nibs. While it tasted more like dessert, I knew that it contained a ton of nutrients and felt good about all of the fresh ingredients used.

Sambazon Smoothies

Sambazon recently introduced two new smoothies, and during our breakfast we sampled both the Chocolate + Almond + Coconut Milk and the Supergreens.

Chocolate & Almonds

I absolutely loved the Chocolate + Almond + Coconut Milk smoothie which features eight grams of vegan whole-food protein and over 90 Açaí berries.  It’s thick, sweet, and filling!

Kale & Ginger

The Supergreens smoothie includes kale and ginger, provides two full servings of fruits and vegetables, and includes 120 Açaí berries.
