Mommy, Mommy…when can we put the tree up?
I want LIGHTS!
Where are the stockings?
I want PRESENTS!
Are you going to have a wreath this year?
Thanksgiving dinner wasn’t even on the table yet and my kids were already longing for Christmas. This is their favorite season of the year and one we all look forward to with much excitement and anticipation. Since we spent our quiet Thanksgiving holiday at home, we decided to use that time to decorate and liven up our space, particularly our living area where we spend a majority of our time together as a family.
This is the time of year when many people are guided by tradition…from the meals they prepare to the way they decorate their Christmas tree. The poinsettia plant has been a part of holiday decor since the 1800s and is best distinguished by its red and green leaves (although, leaves can be a number of colors including orange, cream, pink, and white). While native to Mexico and Central America, the poinsettia plant can be widely found here in the US, and currently at your local Walmart.
Last week while shopping for the holidays, I picked up a few poinsettia plants for our home along with some items to decorate the area around our fireplace. Traditionally, this is where we hang our Christmas stockings so I thought it would be a nice place to incorporate the plants. Along with some new stockings, I picked up a strand of pre-lit garland and Command Hooks to adorn our fireplace.
We simply strung the pre-lit garland across the top of our fireplace using the Command Hooks, hung the stockings, and arranged our Poinsettia Plants which really warmed that area up for the season.
Walmart currently has an expansive selection of poinsettias in various sizes and colors. A basic plant starts at just $2.47 but I personally prefer those potted in Better Homes & Gardens’ planters, which start at $15.00. Our store also had an adorable Santa Boot planter that kids will likely enjoy.
Since this is the first year that I’ve really decorated with poinsettias, I conducted some research to find out how to select and care for them.
How to Choose a Poinsettia Plant?
Choose a plant with dense, dark green foliage and tightly-clustered buds. Avoid plants with yellow or sagging leaves and ensure the plant is free from insects.
How Should I Care for my Poinsettia Plant?
Since poinsettia plants are tropical, exposing them to temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit will damage or kill them. Ideal temperatures range between 65-70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Remember to give them at least 6 hours of indirect sunlight each day and water when the top of the soil feels dry. Remember not to overwater and remove the plants decorative foil once purchased to allow excess water to drain out of the plant.
