How to Get Rid of Bad Breath

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Confession: My love for coffee is only slightly tainted by the unpleasant side effect of coffee breath. And while I used to think that the two were par for the course, I recently learned that 90% of bad breath is caused by bacteria on the tongue. If you want to get rid of bad breath, it is important to go beyond brushing and flossing to the source of the issue which is the tongue.

The Importance of Oral Health

As a healthcare provider and a mom, I am extremely vigilant with my kids and I when it comes to oral health. We never skip our bi-annual dental check-ups, brush and floss twice daily, and avoid sodas and refined sugars that can contribute to cavities. In the 40 years I’ve been alive, I have also never had a single cavity. But the issue of oral health goes deeper, and left unchecked, can have adverse health effects. According to Tung Brush creator Dr Wieder, the tongue was found to be directly responsible for gum disease, which can have adverse health affects including cancer, premature birth, and heart disease.

Oral Health and Your Tongue

The tongue is unique in that it is characterized by nooks and crannies that can house bacteria. These bacteria release odors that can only be removed manually. And while bad breath is an unpleasant result of this bacteria on the tongue, the more serious effect of not removing this bacteria is gum disease. Nearly 75% of people over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease, and left unchecked can result in very serious health conditions including heart disease, esophageal cancer, premature birth, diabetes, and respiratory complications.

Dr. Wieder and his partner used their knowledge and experience in dentistry to create the most effective tongue cleaner on the market. The Tung Brush and Tung Gel are the first in the industry effectively clean the tongue with minimal discomfort. The brush was designed for the tongue’s unique anatomy and features short, firm bristles that work through the tongue’s naturally sticky plaque that forms over its irregular surface. The design of the bristles helps penetrate those crevices where bacteria hide and the physical shape of the brush allows for quick, efficient cleaning of the back portion of the tongue without gagging.

How to Use the Tung Brush

When I first learned about the Tung Brush, I enlisted each of my kids to begin brushing their tongues. We each chose a brush (they are available in a variety of vibrant colors) and set to work to begin removing the bacteria from our tongues. My kids really liked the idea of brushing their tongue, and when I told them about the bacteria that can’t be removed with a toothbrush, they were on board with adding the Tung Brush to their oral regimen.

Tung Brushes and Tung Gel

  • Run the Tung brush under warm water
  • Place a bean-sized amount of Tung Gel on the brush
  • Extend your tongue and lightly brush it from the back toward the front for 10 seconds
  • Be sure to spit out the Tung Gel (do not swallow it)
  • Repeat the steps above a second time
  • Remember to brush your tongue when you brush your teeth, at least twice daily
  • Replace the Tung Brush every three months when you replace your toothbrush

While it may take a bit of getting used, brushing the tongue can have lasting, positive health effects, not the least of which is cleaner, fresher breath.
