With nearly one million apps currently available in the App Store, sifting through them to find the best educational apps for kids has been a challenge. I’ve typically relied on word of mouth and suggestions from my son’s teachers, but with so much content available, how do I ensure that the technology my children are engaging with is appropriate?
Because I didn’t grow up with the type of technology my children have available to them, I have a lot of questions about when children can start engaging with games and apps, how much is too much, and whether or not the apps I’m choosing are the best use of my children’s time. Technology is all around us, and once a week, my son goes to the computer lab as part of his curriculum. With 30+ children in a classroom, it is nearly impossible for teachers to address each individual learning need, which is another testament to the value of technology in educational settings.
Last week, I had an opportunity to chat with Dr. Jody Sherman LeVos, child development and learning expert at LeapFrog. LeVos is responsible for ensuring that LeapFrog’s products are teaching math and science concepts in developmentally appropriate ways. During our chat, she talked about how schools are incorporating educational-based technology into their curriculum, screen time and a healthy digital diet, how parents can find the best educational apps for kids, and the latest in technology trends for kids.
LeVos offered some practical, informative tips to guide parents as they integrate technology into their child’s learning experiences. Here are 5 things parents should look for when choosing the best educational apps for kids:
- Determine if the app was designed and/or approved by an educational expert.
- Choose apps that are fun and interactive and draw kids into the learning process as active participants
- Ensure that the app is age appropriate. (too advanced and the child will be frustrated…below a child’s educational level and they will be bored)
- Find content that teaches your child something new
- Opt for apps that include personalization (level up and down with your child as they progress through the app)
As in previous years, technology gifts will likely top children’s wish lists this Christmas. LeapFrog’s new LeapPad Ultra was recently named one of Dr. Toy’s Ten Best High Technology Products. This latest tablet offers children ages 4-9 access to 800+ apps, videos, ebooks, games, and music available on LeapFrog.com. Kids learn while they engage with content that was designed and approved by an educator. I can’t wait to share with you more about this brand new tablet PLUS I’ll have an awesome giveaway just in time for the holiday season so be sure to come back!
