Spring is all about change…there is a sense of renewal and vibrance that brightens my mood and inspires me to get outside. The dull, leafless trees and plants bloom with life and color. Spring is the season where I feel a sense of urgency to make changes…in our home…in our routine…
I’ve wanted to do something with our third bedroom since we moved into our home over 3 years ago. While we have the occasional visit from my in-laws, I never wanted that room to be a place that isn’t lived in most of the year. And since I work from home, I could really use a space that is my own (my husband tends to agree, particularly on those nights when I’m up long past midnight).
When I learned that Glidden and Disney had partnered to create a line of exclusive paint colors, almost immediately I thought about my childrens’ room. My daughter would love the Disney Princess palette…my son would most definitely choose those colors inspired by his favorite movie, Cars. But some obstacles came to mind…like the fact that they share a room or that they have custom murals on at least two of their four walls.
As I continued to dream up all of the ways I could use Disney Paint to tell a story in our home it hit me! Most people would instinctively think that Disney Paint is for children. But what about grown-up spaces? I love all-things Disney and began brainstorming with my husband how we could personalize my office, transforming it into a modern Disney-inspired space that would inspire me creatively.
I love the idea of painted squares, so I perused the web in search of direction and inspiration. Disney Paint’s website offers a ton of ideas, including the one above, which really served as a basis for my room design. But I wanted something just a bit more edgy and modern, so I continued searching. Babble’s article on modern nursery design inspired my choice of colors while Martha Stewart’s article on using Chalkboard Paint inspired the center design on my wall. We eventually decided to offset the squares and create a center four-square writable space using their Great Slate Chalkboard Paint. Here is the design on “paper.”
Despite the fact that it might look a bit complicated, with a few steps, you can create a modern painted square design on your own wall. Here is what you’ll need to recreate my wall:
- Disney Paint in the following colors: Sleepover Scare, Blustery Day, You Betcha Blue, Glimmering Wings (Magnificent Metallic), Geared Up Grey (Great Slate), and Making Tracks (Great Slate)
- Frog Tape
- Level
- Measuring Tape
- Roller
- Drop Cloth
- *Optional* Moulding
- Brush to paint Moulding
1. Decide how big you want the squares, then measure your wall so that each square is sized and spaced accurately
2. Use the Frog Tape to “map” out your design
3. Prime wall, if necessary
4. Paint two coats using a roller brush
5. Remove the tape when the paint is completely dry
5. Cut the moulding to size, if necessary
6. Paint the moulding
7. Once dry, nail the moulding to the wall
The entire painting process took about a week, however, this was done mostly at night. I definitely think you can cut down some of that time, but be sure you let the paint dry thoroughly in between coats.
Disney Paint is easy to work with, dried quickly, and had very little odor. In fact, the paint contains no VOCs, which I appreciate as a mom. Interestingly enough, we used a plain white paint for the molding and the smell was much more noticeable.
If you have young children, you might be concerned that they will stain the wall with any number of substances. Fortunately, Disney Paint guarantees exceptional durability so that if you need to wipe away a stain, the color will remain.
I absolutely LOVED how this wall turned out. The colors are gorgeous and look authentically Disney. There are 112 unique Disney Paint colors available in eggshell sheen and one gallon is enough to cover 300-450 square feet. Once you’ve painted your space, check out the speciality finishes available to really bring your design to life. You can even use these finishes over existing paint colors if you’d rather not repaint an entire room. Here is a quick overview of Disney’s Specialty Finishes:
All That Glitters: This clear topcoat provides a shimmering glitter finish and can be applied over any painted surface. This paint looks best over light to medium colors.
Speck-Tacular: This clear topcoat provides a sparkling confetti finish and can be applied over any painted surface. This paint looks best over medium to deep colors.
Ready, Set, Glow!: This translucent yellow paint transforms any surface, making it glow in the dark. This paint looks best over light colors.
Great Slate: This paint (available in a variety of colors) turns any surface into a writable chalkboard. Be sure apply two coats and allow each coat to dry for four hours.
Magnificent Metallic: This metallic paint can be tinted to 24 unique colors. For best results, use two coats.
In addition to Disney Paint’s colors and specialty finishes, why not use stencils to personalize your dream space? You can even coordinate with Disney bedding and accessories.
