As an only child growing up in Los Angeles, I never lacked for the basics. In fact, it wasn’t until middle school that I realized my parents were by no means wealthy. I was the first in my immediate family to go to college and my parents made a ton of sacrifices to provide me with private, quality education, facts I didn’t truly appreciate until I was out of school.
My children are growing up in a different age…an age where the emphasis on materialism and competition is difficult to ignore. My husband and I constantly raise the question…How do we teach our children to think beyond themselves and their small circle of friends? How do we instill a passion for our community? Our world?
Last week, I had the privilege of sitting down with Lulu Cerone and her mother Lisa Cerone to talk about the amazing philanthropic work they’ve done with global charities. At the age of 10, Lulu created, organized and executed a school-wide fundraiser to help provide aid to the earthquake victims in Haiti. Her efforts raised more than $4,000, and to date, she has raised more than $20,000 in charitable funds.
According to the mother-daugther pair, even young children can make a difference. Lulu is inspiring kids to make giving back a part of their everyday life through mentoring, kid-driven events such as rock concerts and LemonAID stands, and her signature Philanthro-parties. These parties with a purpose are easy for kids to plan and can be accomplished by doing the following:
1. Identify your passion. Some ideas include sports, music, art, dancing, and video games.
2. Do the activities you are already doing. Any birthday party, team party, holiday gathering or outdoor BBQ can become a philanthro-party. How?
3. Find a cause that will benefit from your celebration.
During my time with Lulu and Lisa, we talked about how LemonAID Warrirors, how Lulu was inspired to begin her philanthropic efforts and some easy tips on hosting a philanthro-party.
Do you have a tween who wants to give back? Through June 9th, Monster High will give Philanthro-party hosts an opportunity to win $1,000 to donate to the cause of their choice. For more information, visit Ghouls Helping Ghouls.
