Homemade Edible Slime

Every year, my kids anticipate the countdown to the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.  Showcasing the best in music, television, film and a host of other categories, kids’ votes decide who will win each award. This year, the show will be hosted by musician/actor Nick Jonas, a fact I learned from my daughter. Additionally, the show will feature appearances by some of the most prominent names in the industry including Jamie Foxx, Liam Hemsworth, Zendaya, and many, many more.

Slime Moment

If you’ve watched the show in previous years, then you know that one of the most exciting parts of the show for kids is when a celebrity gets slimed! Deemed an honor, these slimetastic moments are spontaneous which makes them that much more enjoyable for kids watching the show.

In honor of the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, which has partnered with Walmart, we decided to have our very own “slime moment” by making an easy, 3-ingredient Edible Slime! Traditionally, homemade slime has been made with Borax, glue, food coloring, and water. While not entirely unsafe, you wouldn’t want your infant, toddler, or preschooler to explore their world by tasting this scientific “goo.” Our “recipe” is so safe, you can eat it, although I promise it looks and smells more appetizing than it is.

Edible Slime Ingredients

Here is what you’ll need for Edible Slime!

  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 1/2 packet of your favorite Kool-Aid flavor/color
  • 3 teaspoons of fiber powder

Edible Slime

Directions

  1. Mix all 3 ingredients together, but don’t worry if they don’t incorporate completely.
  2. Microwave the mixture for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until it begins to bubble. Be sure to watch your “slime” as it will likely bubble over the container if it isn’t large enough.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool for 2 minutes.
  4. Microwave the mixture once more for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes or until it bubbles.
  5. Allow to cool completely before handling slime (approximately 15 minutes).

My kids had so much fun with this recipe/craft hybrid activity. It’s easy enough for both of my kids to mix together the ingredients and they really enjoyed picking out their favorite colors/flavors of Kool-Aid to make it their very own personal slime.

Tips

  • Only add as much Kool-Aid as you need to achieve the desired color. Adding in too much Kool-Aid will interfere with the scientific process at work!
  • If you want a thicker slime, repeat the heating process until the desired result is achieved, remembering that the slime will naturally thicken on it’s own once it cools.
  • Place your slime in a plastic bag or container so that you’ll have many, many slimetastic moments!

The Science Behind Edible Slime:

When fiber powder (which contains the ingredient psyllium) is heated with water, together they form a thick, gelatinous mixture that is all-together slimy!
