More and more of us are recognizing the reality that are precious natural resources are finite. My husband and I work very hard to recycle, reuse, and reduce our carbon footprint. One of the most difficult things I’ve had to do is give up bottled water. And I know (in my head) that when it comes to safety there is no “guarantee” that bottled water is cleaner, safer, or better for me. So the question becomes, how do I obtain clean, drinking water that tastes good?
I recently had an opportunity to try out the Restore Clean Water System by HoMedics. I’ve actually tried filtration systems in the past, but none like this one. In fact, I had no idea this type of system existed until recently. First, here is a little more information about the product from the site:
Restore is a complete purification system in an affordable, easy to use pitcher. Restore provides cleaner, great tasting tap water by innovatively combining germ-killing UV Clean technology with a water filtration system.
When it comes to drinking water, there are a few things that are important to me. First off…it should be cold! For some reason, I can’t drink lukewarm water (pregnancy hormones?). Second, it should taste good! Third, it should be safe (meaning free from bacteria, etc. that could get anyone in my family sick). I have to admit that I’ve NEVER been a fan of tap water, especially that which comes from our faucet here in Southern California. So much goes into our water to “treat” it and it ends up tasting very metal-like.
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve actually tried other water filtration systems. So one of the things I questioned was how this system differs from others on the market. First of all, it’s EASY to use. That’s important to a full-time mom and housewife, part-time nurse like me. So what’s to the set-up? Simply wash all the parts with soap and water, rinse the filter and immerse it for 15 minutes, insert the filter into the system, and fill the pitcher with water. It is advised that the first 2 pitchers of water be discarded when first inserting the filter. Once you’re ready, fill the pitcher with water, plug it in, and purify (there is a little switch on the product). It takes about a minute to purify the water (so quick!) and it can be placed in the fridge for up to 2 days before you should re-purify the water. So how does it work?
As mentioned above, the system “combines germ-killing Ultraviolet (UV) Clean Technology to remove bacteria, viruses and microbial cysts with a filtration system to reduce heavy metals, chlorine (taste and odor), and some industrial and agricultural pollutants.” It’s like having a water filtration pitcher and an installed system in one. Some of the particles the filtration system removes include heavy metals, chlorine, and some industrial and agricultural pollutants. The UV technology removes 99.9999% of Bacteria, 99.99% of Viruses, and 99.95% of Microbial Cysts (per the site).
The water from the system is clean, safe, and comparable in taste to the bottled water I typically like to drink. Once it’s been filtered and purified, I honestly can’t tell that it’s tap water (none of that metallic taste I can’t stand).
As far as the cost, if you think about how much you spend in bottled water (we used to go through at least a Costco-sized case a week) over the course of a year, this is definitely going to save you money in the end. Up front, the cost of the system is $99.99 (which includes an 8 cup capacity pitcher with built-in UV lamp, replaceable filter, 1 power adaptor) with Replacement Filters retailing for$7.99. You will need to replace the filter every 40 gallons (but there is an indicator light that will tell you when to do s0). According to the manual, the time frame is approximately 2 months (depending on how much water you drink).

This is one of the prettiest water purifiers I have ever seen. Thanks for the great review.

This is a really neat alternative to what we currently are doing, but at 1/2 a gallon per run though, is a rather expensive alternative.
