School is out in two weeks, but as far as our family is concerned, it might as well be summer. With both of my kids’ major projects now out of the way, and homework consisting solely of reading, we’ve been swimming, road-tripping, camping, and using our smart projector for impromptu movie nights. Summer is always a balance of creating exciting memories and relishing in some well-earned downtime, and yet despite the 400-page books my son has been checking out at our local library, he always gravitates towards his iPad.
The consumption of media is a concern for every parent, and yet, the fact that my kids participate in device-based learning is testament to the educational value that can be realized from carefully selected apps and programs. I still remember the thrill I felt when I received my monthly Highlights Magazine as a child. I’m the girl who always had a book in-hand, but opening up a Highlights Magazine to explore new stories and puzzles offered a different type of reading and learning experience.

Highlights for Children recently introduced a brand new app in partnership with Fingerprint, to give families quality digital content designed to inspire a love of learning. What You Need to Know About the Highlights Every Day App
The app is designed for children ages 6-12, and once downloaded, is very easy to navigate (even for kids at the lowest end of this age range). Every day your child will receive a gift which includes new content such as videos, reading activities and puzzles. The more they use the app, the more activities they can accumulate. Kids can also personalize the experience by saving their favorite activities. The content on the app is different from that contained in their magazine and ideally, kids would spend time exploring Highlights in its many forms.
Perhaps the most compelling characteristic of the app is the daily access to new content. One of my reasons for limiting screen time is the repetition I often see in kids apps. This is time they could be better spent learning, creating, and/or exploring new things. With Highlights Every Day, your child will receive a “present” each day containing brand new videos, stories, puzzles and quizzes. Both of my kids’ love the quizzes which pose questions about personality and then liken them to animals, songs, etc.
Download the Highlights Every Day App
At present, you can download the Highlights Every Day App for free via iTunes and Google Play. You’ll then have access to a limited amount of content during the free seven-day trial. The monthly subscription, which includes up to 5 new pieces of content daily, is then $7.99 per month.
Highlights aims to provide kids “Fun with a Purpose” through their magazines, books, book clubs and mobile apps. For more information or to connect with the brand, visit Highlights For Children on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
