This is part of a compensated campaign with Kellogg’s
Every child deserves to read
One of the most meaningful times with my children is right before bed. We’ve established a routine that they’re used to, which nearly always includes a bath, snuggles, and story time. I’ve been reading to my children since they were infants, and it has become so second nature, that I don’t even think about the fact that we have a large library of books.
Two-thirds of children living poverty do not have books at home. I can’t fathom not having a single book to read to my children. We know that reading is the most important thing a parent can do for their child to help them succeed academically. Reading teaches children about the world and develops their imagination. It is so important, that schools now make it a point to have children reading by the time they complete Kindergarten.
One of the things I love about Kellogg’s is their commitment to making our world a better place through programs like Share Breakfast and Great Starts Great Stories. Together, the brand has teamed up with Taye Diggs and Scholastic to place 200,000 books in home libraries, schools and local communities. In order to achieve this goal, they’ve developed two ways you and I can help:
1. Collect Kellogg’s Great Starts Great Stories codes from participating Kellogg’s products to receive a free book. You can also gift a book to a school in need through Books for Kids, a nonprofit literacy organization. Simply go to KelloggsFreeBook.com to participate.
2. Visit Scholastic.com/MiniMissions to participate in the Frosted Mini-Wheats Mini Missions and earn two free books per month. You can also enter a sweepstakes to win Scholastic books and grants for local schools and communities. September’s Mini Mission is to enjoy nature’s classroom. Ride a bike, go on a nature scavenger hunt, visit an apple orchard or even go camping to complete this mini mission. Also available on the website are free storybooks to get you reading with your kids.
With the new school year just beginning, now is a wonderful time to make reading a priority with your children and perhaps help a child who may not have access to books.
