Help Fund Child Hunger Programs In Your Community With Walmart’s Golden Spark Campaign

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Fact: 1 out of 6 Americans struggle with hunger.
Fact: 1 in 5 children in the U.S. struggle with hunger.

Our nation’s hunger problem is daunting…the figures astounding. Compounding the issue is the harsh reality of a nation trying to recover from the worst drought in over five decades and the lingering effects of high unemployment rates.  With limited food supplies and the rising cost of food, it will take the collaborative efforts of large corporations and individuals working together to be effective.
Last week, I highlighted some ways Walmart is fighting hunger and how you and I can make a difference.  Through Walmart’s Fighting Hunger Together initiative, they’ve managed to provide more than $122 million in grants and close to 600 million pounds of food to communities across the country.  And by 2015, Walmart has committed to donate more than 1 billion pounds of food.
Walmart's Golden Spark Campaign
Last month, Walmart introduced it’s Golden Spark promotion where you can enter to win “sparks” that will help fund child hunger programs in your community.  Through October 14th, Walmart will award 40 Golden Sparks valued at $50,000 each, to those who participate in the Fighting Hunger Together Golden Spark Promotion. Winners will choose the community they wish to receive the funding to start or expand a backpack program. As I mentioned last week, these programs help provide weekend meals to children living in food insecure households.
To nominate a community, simply visit Walmart.com/hunger or enter through Walmart’s Live Better Facebook app through October 14th, 2012.

Additionally, you can generate meal donations for Feeding America by purchasing select products from participating partners (General Mills, Kellogg’s, ConAgra, Unilever, Kraft) at your local Walmart store through October 12th, engaging in the “Give Meal” section of Walmart’s Fighting Hunger Together Site, or by checking into your local store via the Jingit app.

I participate in the Walmart Moms program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions.
