As a Latina woman, it’s often assumed that my skin is unaffected by the sun’s rays. Friends and family presume I tan easily but don’t think that my skin is capable of burning…or worse. The reality is that while I do have more melanin than some, my skin still burns (as was evident this past weekend during my time with Olympus at the US Open of Surf) and skin cancer is always a risk, regardless of ethnic background. Because we see so much sunshine, I’ve built in sunscreen as part of my skin care regime, rain or shine…summer or winter.
I remember growing up with Hawaiian Tropic, an iconic skin/sun care brand that offers sunscreens, tanning products, lip care and more. Interestingly enough, I remember the coconut/island smell more than anything, since I was a young girl when I was first introduced to the line. The brand recently made it’s Walmart debut, and thanks to them I had an opportunity to test out some of their new and signature products.

Since I wear sunscreen daily, I prefer a lotion that absorbs well without leaving an oily residue, as sunscreen often leaves. Most sunscreen has a distinct smell, but Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration Lotion offers it’s signature coconut-like scent which is pleasant. This particular lotion, which is available in an SPF of 12, 30, and 50, moisturizes skin for up to 12 hours and I absolutely love how it feels. It’s made with nourishing antioxidants and island botanicals to give skin soft, luxurious sun protection without feeling weighty or oily. While I received the lotion with an SPF of 12, I would be more apt to use the one that offers a bit more coverage like the one with an SPF of 30.
At various times throughout the year, I struggle with dry, chapped lips. Typically it’s during the summer months when it’s dry ,or during the Fall when the Santa Ana winds pick up. You won’t usually find me without some type of color on my lips, but lipstick can be drying and I often neglect to take care of my lips by putting sunscreen and moisturizer on them. Hawaiian Tropic introduced a new line of lip care products containing an SPF and the concept is brilliant. The lips receive just as much sun exposure and I should be doing more to protect them. One of the products I tried recently was the Aloha Kiss Lip Gloss in Island Berry. This lip gloss is rich, moisturizing, and has a delightful berry flavor. It also contains Aloe Vera, Cocoa Butter, Vitamins A, C, & E and offers an SPF of 20.
The last two products I tried are part of Hawaiian Tropic’s Shimmer Effect line. Have you ever spent a bit of time in the sun and achieved that after-sun glow? With this new product line, you can achieve a shimmery, summer glow, while moisturizing and protecting the skin. The Shimmer Effect lotion is offered in an SPF of 8, 20, and 40 and contains mica minerals designed to enhance and highlight skin tone. It contains the same antioxidants and island botanicals as Hawaiian Tropics Silk Hydration line, but also offers 80 minutes of water resistant protection. After a day at the beach, the park, or the pool, apply the Shimmer Effect After Sun Lotion for additional shimmery hydration!

I also grew up using Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen and its still my sunscreen of choice because it works! I also love the smell. It reminds me so much of summer.

Ooh, that shimmer effect product sounds great! I cannot tan to save my life, but it would be nice to have a summery glow after being at the beach!
