The LA Auto Show is this weekend (and begins tomorrow), and all three of us will be heading to LA to preview the Kids Fun Zone! I can’t wait to see the exhibits (we’re in the market for a new, family car in the upcoming year)! Earlier this week I was offered an opportunity to meet with the Chevy team to preview the brand new Chevrolet Cruze and Volt electric vehicle. Unfortunately, (as in, I was really, really bummed) I wasn’t able to attend. I’m very excited to learn more about cars that use less gas (or no gas!). My friend and fellow OC blogger at OC Mom’s Activity Guide was able to attend and wrote up a fabulous article on Chevrolet’s new cars! Without further ado, help me welcome Katie Simpson from OC Mom’s Activity Guide!
I looked around the room wondering what I was doing there – I was one of a handful of women in the room. Then I heard it, “Our goal is for this to be a car for families…” Bingo, the picture came in to focus. Forget the hype – the Chevy Volt and the Chevy Cruze are here. And if I were the betting type, I’d say they are here to stay. They are GORGEOUS. I’d take either one in a heartbeat (yes, pun intended, remember those commercials?).
The questions from everyone else in the room were about horsepower and the types of materials the interior components are made with. Yes, I admit it… my eyes glazed over. I just wanted to look at the cars up close. Would the Volt be everything it was hyped up to be? I’m not a car expert, I’m a Mom, but what I can tell you is these cars are not what I expected. They are sleek, comfortable, fuel efficient and safe. As a Mom that is what matters most to me!
The event was a special preview open to the press before the LA Auto Show. I got the chance to kick the tires (no, not literally) and sit in the cars. I’m a Lexus, BMW and Mercedes loving woman, so I’m shocking even myself in saying how impressed I was with both of these new cars. The Volt is competing in style with the Toyota Prius, but in my opinion, that is where the comparison stops. The Volt appears to be the next step in automotive technology with fuel economy not seen in mainstream automobiles right now. The Cruze is the answer to Toyota’s Hybrid Camry if you ask me. It’s larger than the Honda Civic, but competitive price-wise. In this economy that’s what we all want to know, right?
I walked away from the night being proud of Chevy (still surprising myself with that…). I’ll save it for another post, but as a working Mom, I also walked away with a new-found respect for Chevy as a company. Their embrace of women and mothers in their workforce is impressive and I can’t wait to tell you more specifics about how real that is, not in theory – but in practice!

Yeah this is key for them to turn things around, and I think it’s a step in the right direction for sure. With the big tax credit it becomes farily affordable, and should only get cheaper.
