Green Your Home Part 1: How To Install A Water Filtration System

Posted by Caryn Bailey 2 Comments

I walked into a grocery store I used to frequent during my years in LA, pleasantly surprised to learn that they no longer offered plastic bags.  In fact, if customers don’t bring in a reusable bag, they have the option of buying one…or simply carrying their groceries out by hand. This is yet one more example of the positive steps large organizations are making towards more sustainably run operations.

Throughout the life of this blog, I’ve talked extensively about our passion for green living and our constant striving to “walk the talk.” Because we live in California, we have many advantages…access to organic, locally grown foods and products…a waste management system that makes it convenient to recycle…information….resources.  Having visited a number of cities across the country, I know that it isn’t necessarily this easy for many families.

In this two-part series, my aim is to show you two easy do-it-yourself projects you can complete to help make your home just a little bit greener. Both projects were directly inspired by Walmart’s Projects Made Simple site.

In my endless effort to find a solution to plastic water bottles, I’ve gone through several water filtration pitchers.  Most worked well, but my ultimate aim was to install a system where our family could literally drink water straight from the tap.  I honestly thought this was an expensive, involved project requiring plumbers and a lot of time I didn’t think we had. But when I was introduced to Walmart’s Projects Made Simple, I happened upon a tutorial that visually walked me through the process in 8 easy steps.

Water Filtration System

In less than 30 minutes and with the help of my husband, we were able to install a 3M Filtrete Under-Sink Advanced Water Filtration System right under our kitchen sink for around $60 (and right now it’s on sale for $40!).  This system makes it easy and convenient for families to have fresh, clean, better-tasting water straight from the tap by removing parasitic cysts and reducing the chlorine taste/odor, sand, sediment, rust, and soil from your water. I personally like the fact that no additional faucet head is needed since we JUST installed a new one a few months ago.

Here is what you’ll need to complete this project:

  • Screwdriver
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Cordless Drill
  • Water Filtration System

Using the project sheet and the video as my guide, here is how I installed this filtration system under the sink:

Overall, I found the project to be straightforward and doable. I was surprised that it wasn’t more involved and quite proud that for the most part, it’s a project I could complete without a plumber.
So how does the water taste? Actually quite good. We’re accustomed to drinking filtered tap water so I assumed that it could only get better.
Stay tuned for my next Green Your Home project where I’ll show you how to replace/install a thermostat and how you’ll save money and energy by using one!
I participate in the Walmart Moms Program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions.

I’m soon Happy you installed a water filter and you shared how ways it is.
I finally installed a shower filter & our hair is dramatically softer, shinier & easy to detangle.
So It must be doing even better things in my body chemistry

Great tutorial! I did something similar and I love having easy access to filtered water. This does remind me that I need to change my filter cartridge. It’s been a while! Since you mentioned pitcher filters, my wife always takes our filtered water and runs in through a Zero Water filtered pitcher. I think it’s hilarious.

Also, I have the same garbage disposal as you (which I also surprised myself by DIYing).
