Snatched is movie all about the ups and downs of the mother/daughter relationship. That’s why I love it so much. Growing up as an only child meant that I spent more time with my mother than most kids. My semblance to my dad went beyond the physical and people picked up on our nearly identical personality quirks immediately. My mom and I couldn’t be more different, which meant that in some respects we got along incredibly well and in others we were in sharp disagreement.
This relationship between mother and daughter is central to 20th Century Fox’s soon-to-be-released film Snatched. Starring Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer, the film follows the unexpected adventures of the mom/daughter duo when their vacation goes awry. After Emily Middleton (Schumer) is dumped by her boyfriend on the eve of their exotic vacation, she persuades her mother Linda (Hawn) to travel with her to paradise. Complete opposites, the two realize that working through their differences is their only escape from the outrageous jungle adventure they find themselves in. The film was written by Amy Schumer, Kim Caramel, and Katie Dippold, who was inspired by her own relationship with her mother.
During an early presentation of the film at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month, I sat down with Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer to talk about how the two translated their real-life chemistry to the scene, the inspiration for many of the film’s comedic and poignant moments, and why everyone will want to call their mom after seeing Snatched.
Goldie Hawn Returns to the Screen in Snatched
It has been 15 years since we saw Goldie Hawn star in the film The Banger Sisters. She credits her return to the screen with timing, the film’s potential to say something meaningful, and the lack of compelling films for “women of a certain age.” “When this came about, it was sort of a dream come true, meeting Amy, who had a sensibility, a similar humor, the ability to make you laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time.” She was stimulated by the potential of this film to “tell a whole story” and to “actually say something.” Hawn confesses that “this character is nothing like me,” given the fact that Linda is a wallflower and Hawn does not identify with those attributes. While challenged by the role, “once she really took over me, then I was comfortable in it.”
Choosing the Right Mother-Daughter Duo
The connection and collaboration between actors “is what makes movies good (Hawn).” When Schumer first met Hawn, she was “star struck.” “My whole life she was my favorite actor.” When Schumer finally approached Hawn, she briefed her on the film, including her vision of the two as mother and daughter. “We really wanted this to be a movie about mothers and daughters and just how unique that dynamic is (Schumer).” Their vision for the film was to tell the story through a lot of laughs but really “have it grounded in a real relationship (Schumer).”
Inevitably, the two learned much about each other. “I was surprised at how open Goldie was…to meeting new people and experiences. I’m more guarded [whereas] she gives everyone the benefit of the doubt and I really tried to learn from that (Schumer).” Similarly, Hawn felt like the two learned from each other and about each other. “And when you learn about each other, you obviously learn about yourself (Hawn).”
Snatched: Behind-the-Scenes
With Hawn and Schumer as the starring mother-daughter duo, I imagine the film will evoke much laughter. In one particular scene, the two are riding in the back of a truck with chickens. After several takes, Schumer thought “Is Goldie going to turn on me? She’s in the back of a chicken truck [and] it’s 110 degrees out here. Like, ‘What did you get me into?’ It was just funny.” The two also had a running joke where Schumer would pick Hawn up because she is light. “It wasn’t in the script, but we started having this thing in a lot of scenes that I would pick her up (Schumer).”
Real Mom Moments
The theatrical release of Snatched is perfectly timed to coincide with Mother’s Day. In the midst of this comedic adventure is a story about a mother and a daughter working through their differences. Schumer drew from her own experiences with her mom as she worked on portraying the role of Emily. “There [are] a lot of things taken from my exact real life with my mom” remarks Schumer. In fact, one of the lines in the film comes from an exact moment between Schumer and her mother. “Just because you can’t control this moment, you don’t have to lash out at me.” Schumer drew from those moments that she felt audiences could relate to.
Hawn once said that women crave their mother. In the midst of this comedic action film, are real, poignant moments that will likely compel you to call your own mother. “There is a moment in the movie where I say ‘You’re always there, like, if I call you at 3:00 in the morning [and] I have a nightmare she’ll pick up. She always answers (Schumer).”
Snatched will debut in theaters May 12th, 2017. “Snatch” your tickets now and BYOM (Bring Your Own Mom) to see the film opening weekend! You can also keep up to date by visiting Snatched on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
