At almost 3 years old, my son has outgrown many of the shows targeted towards preschoolers. But he still enjoys Sesame Street, Dinosaur Train, and Sid the Science Kid. We’ve had several opportunities to visit the Jim Henson Company in Los Angeles and my son has even had an opportunity to meet Sid himself.
Sid is helping kids get off the couch and on their feet with his latest book, entitled, Everybody, Move Your Feet! Here is a brief summary of the book:
When Sid decides to sit and watch television all weekend long, he learns that there is just one problem with his plan: sitting around and not moving would make his body feel terrible. At school Sid and his friends learn that exercising is a really fun way to stay healthy and it makes your body feel great!
I diligently limit my son’s television time, mostly by making sure we’re out of the house and busy. When we’re at home, I watch the clock to ensure my son doesn’t spend too much time in front of the tube. We play outside, bake, do crafts, and read (at least 20 minutes). It’s very easy to let time pass by while in front of the television. And for reasons that are baffle me, children, even young babies, are drawn to the television. I don’t think Sid is the first or last kid to want to spend an entire day watching television.
Everybody, Move Your Feet is part of HarperCollins Let’s-Read-And-Find-Out Science collection, which introduces basic science concepts to young children and explains how the word works. It’s fitting, considering Sid is inquisitive about how things in the world work.
One of the aspects that is appealing to children is that Sid is an energetic, lovable character. The book also follows the same story sequence used in the shows. As a parent, I like that the book encourages children to seek to find out how things work (in this instance, our bodies). The book is geared towards children ages 3-6 (the same target age range for the show) and introduces concepts in meaningful, comprehensible ways. The books also include an activity at the end which corresponds to the topics covered in the book.
There are 3 other books in the series including Sid the Science Kid: What’s The Smell, The Trouble With Germs, and A Cavity is a Hole in Your Tooth.
