Five Excellent Parenting Tips For the Modern Family *Giveaway*

Posted by Caryn Bailey 55 Comments

This giveaway is now closed. Thanks for stopping by. The winner is Liz N. Congrats!

No compensation was received for this post. As a Fox Home Entertainment Insider, I receive products for review/giveaway.

Last week, Modern Family was named best comedy series for the 4th year in a row at the 65th annual Emmy Awards.  The show boasts a phenomenal cast including Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (whom I know from my Moms LA circle!).

Modern Family

If you’re unfamiliar with the show, it follows three very different but interconnected blended families as they face life challenges.  In the fourth season, now available on Blu-ray and DVD, we find that Jay (Pritchett) and Gloria (Vergara) are expecting a baby, Haley (Sarah Hyland) is off to college, and Lily (Anderson-Emmons) has her first day of Kindergarten. The fourth season is certain to delight, particularly if you own it on DVD or Blu-ray. Some of the Bonus Features that you’ll want to check out include both deleted and alternate scenes, the gag reel, and The Modern Guide to Parenting.

For many families, the Fall is all about transitions…perhaps it is a new grade or even a new school.  To celebrate the release of Modern Family: The Complete Fourth Season, here are Five Excellent Parenting Tips to help families through life’s transitional stages:

Be Prepared and Anticipate the Unexpected: Any child transitioning into a new life stage will benefit from a little preparation. Books and games can be a great way to educate young children about what they can expect in those first few days.

Set Guidelines: Young adults entering junior high, high school, and college should be taught that their parents may not always be there to set or enforce the rules.  Instilling a sense of responsibility will help them remember to make the right choices.

Open the Communication Lines: Regular, scheduled, family communication helps deepen relationships, offering the support children need to face life’s challenges.  Whether it’s a weekly phone call or nightly dinner conversations, be sure to keep the lines of communication open.

Show You Care:  Children need to know that their parents are interested, engaged, and excited about what they’re doing.  Celebrate their accomplishments and offer encouragement through disappointments.  Ask questions, stop and listen, and focus your attention regularly on your child so that they do not seek approval and acceptance from outside sources.

Take Time For Yourself: Whether you’re a mom finding yourself alone for the first time in 5 years as your child begins Kindergarten, or a couple who’s last child has gone off to college, this coming of age can be bittersweet.  Take this time to start a hobby, dive back into a career, or even travel to keep from focusing on the inevitable “growing up” your child must do.

Modern Family on Blu-ray

I love Modern family because I grew up with Ed Oneil on Married with children…As an adult, I still get lost in the show similarly how I would with others like Rosanne or Married with children when I was a kid.
