Like many women I know around my age, maintaining consistency with a fitness routine can be challenging. I really enjoy walking and running as a form of exercise, but without accountability, I’ll find that days go by without a single visit to the gym. A few years ago, I started wearing a fitness tracker on my waist and it gave me the motivation I needed to be active every single day. Unfortunately, that device somehow made it into our washing machine and because I failed to replace it, once I again I found myself inconsistent with staying active every day.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been testing out the FitBit Flex Wireless Activity Band, and it has renewed my passion to get in my daily 10,000 steps, which is the suggested amount of activity necessary to maintain my current weight and to maintain/improve my health. Wearable fitness trackers have gained popularity because they are easy to set up and use, and can provide a wealth of information from quality of sleep to the number of calories you’ve burned. Seeing how active (or inactive) I’ve been on any given day compels me to make an immediate change. The FitBit Flex has also helped me set and achieve measurable goals, something I have not been successful with on my own.
Because technology can be intimidating for people, I appreciated how easy the FitBit Flex was to set up and use. The device comes with 2 wearable bands in different sizes, the fitness/sleep tracker, a charging cable and a wireless sync dongle to monitor your fitness trends. You’ll need to visit Fitbit.com/setup to download their free software that will enable you to link your device (laptop, tablet, etc.) to the FitBit and sync your data. This process took just a few minutes and included step-by-step directions that were very easy to follow. You’ll need to charge your device before using it, but once fully charged, the battery will last up to 5 days.
Once you’ve completed the set-up, wear the device throughout the day and night to track your steps, active minutes, the distance you’ve completed, the number of calories burned, the number of hours you slept, the quality of that sleep, and the number of times you were awakened. You can also set a silent vibrating alarm for a more peaceful wakeup call.
If you like to have all of your data at the tip of your fingers, I highly recommend downloading the FitBit smartphone app. All of the information tracked by the FitBit Flex can be found here in real-time which is a great motivator to make immediate changes. You can also input the foods you’ve eaten and keep track of the calories you are taking in and expending. In addition to monitoring the steps and distance you’ve traveled in a given day, you can also use the app to track your runs and hikes using GPS, record workouts, and control music while you workout right from the app.
The innovation packaged in such a small device is impressive and I still don’t think I’ve explored every facet yet. Once you purchase a FitBit device, you can sync them all into one account (I currently also own the FitBit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale which syncs with the FitBit Flex to track weight trends). You also have access to a wealth of free fitness tools to help you stay motivated to achieve your goals.
The device itself is durable and I like that it fits snugly inside of the silicone band. Once I wore it for about an hour, I didn’t even notice it was there. The FitBit Flex is water-resistant and designed to be worn 24-7, even in the shower! And if you want to make a fashion statement, check out the rainbow of colors available for the Flex Wristband.
Having had a bit of experience with FitBit’s products, I still find myself impressed with the technology behind the FitBit Flex which makes it easy to see why it is one of Walmart’s Top 100 Gifts. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast looking to challenge yourself or you’re simply looking to take control over your health, check out the FitBit Flex, currently available at Walmart. The FitBit Flex retails for $94.95 at Walmart, however, you can pick it up for just $69 during Walmart’s Black Friday Electronics Event at 8 pm on Thanksgiving Day (November 27th, 2014) ! You’ll need to be sure you are in line before 8 pm to secure a wristband so that you can purchase the product.
