With all of the free time we have been afforded this summer, I’ve been trying to be purposeful about planning and cooking healthy (and sometimes indulgent) meals for my family. The interesting thing about the summer is that sometimes all of that free time and the “lazy, hazy days of summer” mindset means I’m taking shortcuts and cutting corners when it comes to meals and snacks.
Last week, I had an opportunity to speak with Alison Sweeney from The Biggest Loser. The reality show host, actress, producer, director, author, and mother has partnered with Frigidaire and The City of Hope to help raise awareness and funding for diabetes research and prevention. “What I love about {this initiative} is that they are educating people with recipes and tips to help them be preventative (Sweeney).” As host of a show that strives to help people get healthy, I asked Sweeney to share some of her best tips for helping busy families make healthier choices to stay energized throughout the summer. “People associate vacation with unhealthful eating, but the key is to flip your thinking. Vacation time and time off is a time to eat healthier. I have more time to cook or take a 90 minute yoga class or plan something special with my kids to be active” (Sweeney). It’s interesting how a change in perspective can induce important lifestyle changes like diet. “Instead of looking at {the summer} as an excuse to treat your body badly, look at it as an opportunity to be better to your body and to enjoy being healthy” (Sweeney). As a woman who wears many hats, I appreciated her tips and her perspective that lifestyle changes like diet are easier said than done. By making that simple mental switch, we can all commit to taking care of ourselves right now.
To kick off this latest initiative, Frigidaire invited the public to The Grove to participate in The Sack Race to test their unpacking skills for a chance to win a Gallery French Door Refrigerator. According to Sweeney, this refrigerator “allows people to customize it to fit their own needs.” Flip Up & Slide Under Shelves, Effortless Glide Crisper Drawers, and Store-More Bins make it easy for families to keep fresh fruits and vegetables at the front of the refrigerator. If those items are the first thing a person sees when they open the refrigerator, they are more likely to make a healthy choice. Sweeney also suggested purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables and immediately slicing them so that they are ready to eat. When asked whether or not this new refrigerator helped keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer, her response was brilliant: “The key is not to expect fruits and vegetables to last longer but to eat them!”
Sweeney is currently working on the 15th season of The Biggest Loser and was able to confirm that one of the contestants will be Ruben Studdard from American Idol! I’m personally very excited to see him inspire others towards healthier lifestyles. Sweeney just released her novel The Star Attraction, “a fun summer beach read” according to the author and her Hallmark Channel movie Second Chances, premieres on July 27th, 2013.
As part of The Frigidaire Sack Race, they donated $5 for every tweet or retweet sent with the hashtag #EndDiabetes last week. For healthy eating information, organization tips, and recipe from Alison Sweeney and City of Hope’s culinary ambassador Katie Chin, visit Facebook.com/Frigidaire.
