Growing up with a musically inclined father meant that I was singing Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise long before I knew the name Jimmy Buffet. The musical legend is known for his songs about that “island life.” Inspired by his music and his travels, Escape to Margaritaville is a show about the choices we make and the people we become when we’ve had a change in latitude. Escape to Margaritaville first debuted at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2017 then went on to open on Broadway in 2018. Locals and visitors can see the musical this winter at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.
Jimmy Buffet
Singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffet is best known for his travel-inspired songs, including Margaritaville, Come Monday, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. As a child, Buffet became addicted to National Geographic and is a frequent traveler to remote and exotic places across the globe.
Most of the 50 albums he has recorded have gone gold, platinum, or multi-platinum, a testament to his talent and popularity. He has also received two Grammy nominations, numerous CMA awards, and received one of the nation’s highest songwriting honors when he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Margaritaville was also inducted into the 2016 Grammy Hall of Fame for its cultural and historic significance. Buffet still performs to sold-out audiences (the crowds are largely multi-generational), many of whom dress in outrageous tropical outfits and headwear and are affectionately known as Parrot Heads.
Buffet is also a best-selling author and he is only one of nine in the history of The New York Times Bestseller List to have reached #1 on both their fiction and non-fiction lists. Additionally, he owns the restaurant chain Margaritaville Cafe and co-developed the Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant chain.
Escape to Margaritaville
Escape to Margaritaville features the music and lifestyle of Jimmy Buffet with an original story and a mix of new songs and well-loved classics. The story follows a part-time bartender/singer who falls for a career-minded tourist. In Magaritaville, people come to escape from it all…and stay to find the unexpected. This funny, heartwarming musical is a tribute to Buffet’s escapism lifestyle and his legend as a musician.
