Last week, my passion for film and my foodie side merged at Vincenti Ristorante, Brentwood’s hip and upscale Italian Restaurant. I, along with several local food bloggers, had an opportunity to lunch and learn from food stylist Susan Spungen and Eat Pray Love producer Dede Gardner. The summer drama/romance was one I actually made time to see in the theaters because I was fascinated by the story of a woman who set out to travel and rediscover herself.
The film is a true story and based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s inspirational best-selling memoir (which admittedly, I did not read). After her divorce, the author, played by Julia Roberts, decides to take a year-long sabbatical from her job and sets out on a “quest to marvel at and travel the world while rediscovering and reconnecting with her true inner self.” Gilbert experiences the “simple pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy, the power of prayer in India, and the inner peace and balance of love in Bali.”
I re-visited the film over the weekend to view it in light of the role food plays. Food stylist Susan Spungen spoke about the challenges of maintaining the fresh look of food in the sweltering Italian heat and how incredible it was to shop in Italy for food!
Susan Spungen was the founding food editor of Martha Stewart Living and her film work includes Julie and Julia, It’s Complicated, and Eat Pray Love.
Eat Pray Love is available on DVD for $28.95 and Blu-ray for $34.95.
No compensation was received for this post. I attended a luncheon and received a copy of the DVD.

Its funny that I stumbled on this post today… I actually rented this movie to watch tonight. I’m not one for girlie movies usually, but this is one that I’ve been eyeing for weeks now and finally gave into! Can’t wait…
