So much of what my kids remember about Christmas are the memories we share that can’t be wrapped in neat little packages. When this year’s toys are soon forgotten, they will still be talking about the snowball fights we had Christmas Eve and our exciting adventure on a vintage train to Christmas Town. Since food is such an integral part of our holiday celebrations, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen baking, cooking and creating in the kitchen. In the midst of the busy holiday season, it wasn’t until Christmas Eve that we realized we still had not created our annual Gingerbread House.
When my kids were younger, I’d often purchase pre-assembled Gingerbread House Kits so that we could focus our time on the part they most enjoy…decorating. This year, we were introduced to Create A Treat’s Gingerbread House Kits which allow for limitless creativity while providing all of the tools needed to ensure success. The kits are housed in the bakery section of your local Walmart and include pre-cut gingerbread cookies, pre-made icing, candy for decoreating, and an E-Z build tray.
“Building” the gingerbread house was easier than I anticipated, thanks to the E-Z Build Tray that is included with this kit. Simply pipe the thick, quick-dry icing into the tray to provide a secure foundation. We actually let the completed house sit for a few hours to ensure it was secure before beginning to decorate. Admittedly, I traditionally shy away from kits that require any type of assembly because I’ve had the unfortunate experience of having these houses fall apart during the decoaring process. The visual instructions included with the kit make the entire process seamless and practically ensure success.

Once your house is built, you’ll want to plan out your design. I perused the web in search of ideas and finally decided that I wanted the two dominate colors to be red and green. Apart from the color scheme, I allowed my children to showcase their creativity. My son wanted snow covering “the ground” so I pulled out a bag of flake coconut which worked perfectly. My daughter wanted a “family” to live inside the house, so we used candy people and secured them “outside” with frosting.
If you visit Create A Treat’s website, you’ll see several houses to inspire your creation. One of the best resources I found was a section detailing how to use common foods and snacks like cereal, pretzels, nuts, and even cinnamon sticks as decor items for your Gingerbread House. In addition to the items provided in the kit, we used flake coconut for snow, life savers for the roof, and candy people for our Gingerbread Family.
