As a young girl, my daughter was captivated by Dora the Explorer’s sense of adventure and astute problem-solving skills. As a parent, I appreciated the ties to Latina culture and Dora’s depiction as a positive role model for young girls. With two stage adaptations, a book series, and a gaming series, it was time to bring Dora the Explorer to life. Earlier this summer, Paramount released Dora and the Lost City of Gold, a live action film that follows Dora and her friends as teens. Now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital, be sure to download our free Dora and the Lost City of Gold Printables for your very own movie night.
Dora the Explorer
The school-age series follows the adventures of Dora, a seven-year-old Latina girl and her sidekicks, a talking purple backpack and a monkey named boots, as they overcome obstacles or solve puzzles during her travels. During the shows, the characters often break the fourth wall, encouraging kids to help them solve their challenges. The incorporation of the Spanish language was also a huge draw for our family.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold
Dora is now a teenager who has spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents. Her biggest challenge now is high school. But when her parents mysteriously disappear while searching for the Lost City of Gold, Dora must lead a group of inexperienced high schoolers on a wild quest to save them. This adventure-filled film finds Dora, Diego, and their new friends navigating the jungle, outrunning treasure hunters, and solving ancient puzzles to unlock the mystery of the mythical city.
Much like the animated series, the film is filled with moments of exploration and adventure. My daughter really liked seeing a more grown-up version of Dora, particularly as she is in-between animated and teen-centric shows and films. All of your favorite characters return, including Boots, Backpack, Map, and Swiper. And while the film tends to lean towards an older audience, kids who grew up watching the series will appreciate the nods to the series including her early breaking of the fourth wall to ask viewers to repeat words in Spanish. Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a funny, heartwarming adventure for the whole family that honors Dora’s spirit but allows her the freedom to grow up. Dora and the Lost City of Gold stars Isabela Moner, Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, and Danny Trejo.
