I’m always surprised at the immense creativity displayed in duck-tape inspired works of art across the web. Something as simple and practical as Duck Tape has now become a versatile crafting tool used to create everything from a simple phone case to an elaborate party mask. After being surprisingly impressed with how spectacular my Duck Tape pumpkin turned out, I’ve been challenging myself to think outside of the box when it comes to using Duck Tape for crafts.
If you visit Ducktivities website you’ll find several Halloween-themed crafts perfect for getting into the spirit of the season. Since so much of this spooky holiday revolves around decor and ambiance, I thought I’d create Duck Tape Halloween Placemats. This particular craft is incredibly easy and can be completed in less than an hour.
Here is what you’ll need for this project:
- 1 Roll of Black Duck Tape
- 1 Roll of Orange Duck Tape
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Double-Sided Tape
How to Make Duck Tape Placemats:
- Create 7 pieces of black Duck Tape Fabric
- To create Duck Fabric, measure a 21-inch piece of black Duck tape and lay sticky side up
- Measure an additional 21-inch long piece of black Duck tape and lay it sticky side down on top of the other strip
- Repeat until you have 7 pieces of black Duck Tape Fabric
- Create 10 pieces of orange Duck Tape Fabric 15 inches in length
- Lay the 7 pieces of black Duck Tape Fabric horizontally in the shape of a rectangle
- Weave each of the 15-inch pieces of orange Duck Tape Fabric through the black Duck Tape Fabric to create an alternating pattern
- Use double-sided tape to secure the Duck Tape Fabric together
- Use your rotary cutter to trim excess on all 4 sides
I absolutely loved how these placemats turned out and they were easier to create than anticipated. The trickiest part of the entire project is ensuring the Duck Tape lines up evenly when creating the Duck Tape Fabric. This took a bit of practice but can be accomplished by laying one piece of Duck Tape down sticky side up and then lining up the second piece before adhering. You also want to ensure that you adhere the tape in one motion so the tape does not bubble. You can use your rotary cutter to trim the Duck Tape Fabric but be careful not to trim too much or your pieces won’t look the same when you weave them through to create the placemat.
