A lot of things you see as a child remain with you…you spend a lot of your life trying to recapture the experience.
– Tim Burton
My love for film really stems from those evenings and weekends watching classics with my father. We would often watch Tim Burton’s best-known films like Beetlejuice (one of my dad’s favorites), Batman, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. At the time, I was a child and knew nothing of the man. I was simply drawn to his films…their style…their creativity…their delve into the supernatural…
This fall, Disney will release Frankenweenie, a stop-motion animated film directed by the brilliant and insanely creative Tim Burton. During my recent trip to LA with Disney, we were treated to an extended sneak peek of the soon-to-be released film, which details the heartwarming story about young Victor, a boy who uses the power of science to bring back his best friend and beloved dog Sparky to life. Unfortunately, Sparky comes back with some minor “adjustments” and the town learns that a new “leash on life” can result in unintended, monstrous consequences.
While researching the film, I learned that this film is actually a remake of a film short by Tim Burton of the same name and parodies/pays homage to Frankenstein. Both the film short and the feature-length film were inspired by true events in Tim Burton’s life and is such, semi-autobiographical. “A lot of [the film] really draws from his [Tim Burton’s] personal experience,” (Producer Allison Abbate). “…he loves that contrast between the monsters and the normal suburban life.”
The film definitely exudes old fashioned, Hollywood horror but not in a frightening way. I love how Burton opted to shoot in black and white which contributes to the overall tone of the film. Frankenweenie will be the first black and white feature and first stop-motion film to be released in IMAX 3D.
In anticipation of the film’s Fall release, Disney launched The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition which will showcase live sets, original sketches, props, puppets and other items from the film.
The world exhibition began in Barcelona Spain and will tour through 7 countries including Spain, France, England, Japan, Mexico, Canada and the US. Here are the proposed locations/dates for the tour:
