Earlier this year, one of the most anticipated computer-animated films whisked audiences away to the lush Highlands of Scotland. Disney/Pixar’s Brave, now available On Demand, tells the story of Merida, the feisty, headstrong daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor who is determined to change her fate. In a land filled with mystery and tradition, Merida finds herself at odds with what is expected from her as the daughter/princess of the Royal Family and her desire to explore and be free. According to tradition, she is destined to marry one of the lords of the land, but she is simply not ready. In a desperate attempt to change the course of her future, Merida turns to a witch, who grants her a spell with beastly consequences. It will be up to her to undo the curse and discover the true meaning of bravery.
The first time I watched the film, I was taken aback by its visual beauty. While reminiscent of the country we lived in for a stent, the film takes place in the more rugged Highlands, rather than the cities or suburbs, which helps to create a magical, mysterious setting for the story. The story possesses all the heart you would expect from a Pixar film with memorable, relatable characters.
To celebrate the On Demand release of the film, we had a red carpet viewing party…complete with a step and repeat! My kids absolutely love family movie nights, particularly the pizza and popcorn that has become a tradition. If you wanted to host your own Brave-themed party, you could easily do so by picking up themed party supplies, ordering an easy meal such as sandwiches or pizza, and planning Brave-themed activities. Here are a few photos from our party:
