My son knows quite a bit about animals for a 3 year old. It’s not uncommon for my son to point out polar bears and tortoises by name. His first look at flamingos was at our local zoo. He recognized them from the Animal Baby books we get every month in the mail.
Disneynature recently released The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos on DVD and Blu-Ray. I feel like I say this every time I watch a Disneynature film…but I will never look at flamingos the same way. The Crimson Wing follows the adventures of a sole chick who is separated from her mother at birth. Her story demonstrates the strength and resilience of the flamingo species. Here is a short synopsis:

The film follows flamingos throughout their life cycle portraying birth (hatching) and even death (which may be a bit mature for young children). However, Disneynature has a way of depicting nature in a beautifully authentic way. The backdrop for the film is the picturesque Tanzania, and the filmmakers capture the rich color and geography of this place. But it is in scenes like the one where the flamingo discovers her wings, that the grace and beauty of this bird is fully realized. The film offers viewers a unique perspective on the flamingo, a bird often overlooked.
